Abilene, the most advanced research and education network in the United States, today announced the completion of its upgrade from 2.5 Gigabits per second (Gbps) to 10 Gbps. The Internet2 backbone network upgrade quadruples the capacity to more than 15,000 times faster than a typical home broadband connection. Abilene partners, Indiana University, Juniper Networks and Qwest Communications, provided the equipment and services to successfully implement the network upgrade.

'New computer models have bolstered the case for a theory of what causes a white-dwarf supernova to occur. Under certain conditions, the massive stellar explosions happen when a white dwarf star in a binary system accretes material from its neighbor until, eventually, the big blast occurs. ORNL astrophysicists were among researchers who applied their computational and experimental support to work published in a paper by Arizona State University.

AMD announced that the AMD Opteron processor will power the Sun Fire(TM) V20z server, the first in a family of AMD Opteron processor-based products from Sun Microsystems. The Sun Fire V20z, the first server to come out of a strategic alliance announced by AMD and Sun less than three months ago, gives customers industry-leading performance in the Solaris Operating System or Linux environment.
