After building the world's 3rd fastest supercomputers on its first try, Apple Computer Inc. said Monday it will again team with Virginia Tech to make another high performance machine using its new 64-bit Xserve G5 computer. Xserve, a thinner, more compact machine designed for clustering with other computers, will replace the supercomputer Tech built in November using off-the-shelf G5 PowerMacs.

Atempo, Inc., a global provider of high-performance data protection software, today announced that its Time Navigator(tm) backup and recovery software is now certified to work with SGI(r) InfiniteStorage Data Migration Facility (DMF). Atempo's product offers an integrated data protection and data retention solution for large, data intensive environments. SGI customers use DMF to implement and automate Data Lifecycle Management in policy environments which scale to hundreds of terabytes. Now customers can rely on Atempo's Time Navigator as a high-performance solution to protect data in their SGI environments.

BakBone Software today announced that NASA Langley Vehicle Analysis Branch is using NetVault to backup mission-critical flight trajectory and atmospheric data from NASA's January 2004 MER-Spirit and Opportunity (Mars Exploration Rover) entry, descent and landings on Mars. This data will be used in future MER projects including the slated 2005 Mars Reconnaissance Orbitor and 2007 Phoenix Lander missions.
