Staff Position at San Diego Supercomputer Center

DESCRIPTION: The User Services Consultant provides front-line support to the national community of computational science researchers who use high performance computing (HPC) resources at SDSC. Primary responsibilities include staffing the Consulting hotline phone-line, fielding submitted e-mail trouble reports, consulting with researchers on porting or writing programs on SDSC's HPC resources. Provide first-level assistance with the full range of complex problems associated with writing, developing, debugging, profiling and running HPC applications, as reported by phone, e-mail and web form. Work with SDSC staff in follow-up to resolve reported problems. Provide advanced technical guidance to others at the same or lower level on an ongoing basis. Practical knowledge of HPC is necessary in order to identify and categorize user problem reports. Must proactively anticipate and address user needs. Contribute to educational and outreach efforts of the Center by developing and delivering training classes, workshops, or seminars in the high performance computing community. Perform complex programming and systems analysis tasks, testing and benchmarking. Install, configure and maintain new software on UNIX systems. QUALIFICATIONS: * Bachelor in Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science or a related scientific field, plus scientific/engineering programming experience as typically acquired in five years, or comparable combination of education and experience. * Strong, demonstrated knowledge of and experience with key programming languages such as MPI, Fortran, C, C++, Perl and application development environments relevant to supercomputing programming. * Advanced knowledge of and experience with software utilities such as text editors, compilers and debuggers. * Demonstrated customer service skills and work experience in a service environment. * Demonstrated experience and interest in consulting, advising and training others on usage of computer facility's state-of-the-art hardware and software resources.
