Ohio Supercomputer Center Uses NetEffect, Fujitsu

NetEffect, the leader in next generation Ethernet connectivity solutions, today announced that the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) is featuring NetEffect’s NE010e 10Gb iWARP Ethernet channel adapters (ECAs) in a demonstration of iWARP Ethernet at SC06. OSC computer scientists will construct a high-speed iWARP Ethernet network with servers running Apache Web Server software and the Fujitsu XG1200 Low Latency 10Gb switch, connected by NetEffect 10Gb iWARP Ethernet adapters. NetEffect has developed the industry's highest performing Ethernet channel adapter and is the only company delivering adapters that fully implement the iWARP Ethernet standard, allowing data center managers to realize 10Gbps throughput using existing Ethernet hardware and software. OSC is Ohio's high performance computing and networking center. The Center provides scientific computing, networking, educational outreach, and information technology resources to state and national academic and industry researchers. At SC06 OSC (booth #326) will showcase the performance gains of Apache Web Server software when running on a 10Gb iWARP Ethernet infrastructure. Apache has been the most popular web server on the Internet since April 1996 and is used by more than 60 percent of Web sites. “We’ve been watching with great interest as the vendor community, led by NetEffect, developed iWARP Ethernet into the commercially viable high-performance computing solution it is today. In addition to the performance and reduced CPU load, it is particularly exciting to consider the range of applications that can be improved with iWARP Ethernet,” said Dennis Dalessandro, network researcher, OSC. “We’ve been particularly impressed by NetEffect’s industry leadership and product performance, as is on display at SC06.” “OSC has an impressive research team. They have already tested our products for low latency, high bandwidth, and low CPU utilization and published those results earlier this year. We think the industry will appreciate their new effort with the Apache Web Server, demonstrating the versatility of iWARP Ethernet to benefit a wide range of data center applications,” said Rick Maule, chief executive officer, NetEffect. “Our team has worked hard to deliver a solution that provides exceptional multi-gigabit performance using industry standard Ethernet hardware and software for a wide range of commercial applications. We are pleased that OSC’s research has validated that versatility.” “Fujitsu is committed to meeting customers' mission-critical IT needs with continued improvements in switching technology reliability and performance. We are pleased that we were able to recognize the imminent need for lower latency and higher throughput data center fabrics and be among the first to introduce a switch product to address the need,” said Vic Herring, senior director, new products group, Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. “Working alongside innovators such as NetEffect and OSC ensures Fujitsu will be able to provide the market with leading-edge, proven technologies that advance customer’s business goals.”
