System Engineer

Overview: The National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has one System Engineer position available. Responsibilities involve functioning as a member of the technical team providing primary technical support to NCSA. Including: installing, maintaining, and supporting hardware and software systems. The position will also include media management and overall building environment. Must be able to work with a diverse population and analyze hardware and software systems. Key Responsibilities: Install, configure, test, and update computing hardware and software systems, coordinating with vendors as applicable. Document and report problems to vendors. Integrate computing hardware and software systems into the NCSA computing environment. Advise application developers, users, and consultants on optimal use of computing systems. Install, evaluate, maintain system-level software, including local modification of operating system software or system level software. Monitor use of system resources (e.g. processors, disk, memory) and adjust configurations and/or design and implement system enhancements to achieve optimal use of system resources and/or user performance. Develop and maintain monitoring tools as needed for NCSA and TeraGrid operations support activities. Under the direction of the Senior System Engineer or the Technical Program Manager, analyze and resolve system problems, including functional as well as performance issues. Maintain documentation on system capabilities and equipment, both for internal group use and for operations staff. Work with documentation staff to provide material for production of user documentation. Train other staff and consultants on support of new capabilities and services. Write, document, and maintain system administration tools and scripts for internal use. Research and obtain system administration tools available outside of NCSA as appropriate. Respond to messages sent to the NCSA Help desk Overall helpdesk systems monitoring Help desk: serve as initial resource person for first-level error detection and correction. Required Education and Training: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field preferred, but degrees in alternate fields will be considered/accepted if accompanied by equivalent experience (depending on nature and depth of experience as it relates to current NCSA technologies). 1 year of experience with networked environments and a wide variety of software and hardware. Knowledge in the management and support of individual technologies such as UNIX system administration. This position requires skills and knowledge in one or more areas of software development, computer system (technical) management, performance analysis and tuning, network architecture, and the ability to diagnose complex hardware/software component and interaction problems. This is an academic professional position at NCSA and is a 12-month, 100%-time appointment with regular University benefits. Salary commensurate with experience.
