Overview: The National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has one Assistant Director position available. This position is expected to provide support, and in some cases have primary responsibility for the day to day management needs of the Persistent Infrastructure (PI) directorate allowing the Associate Director of PI to focus on strategic activities. In some cases, this position will have direct involvement in some of these activities potentially including planning for NCSA and the PI directorate; promoting services, activities, and partnerships on a national and international scale; developing funding resources for the advancement of NCSA and PI directorate goals; creating new and extend existing partnerships that advance NCSA’s mission of designing, building, deploying national-scale cyberinfrastructure to advance science and engineering in the United States. PI is responsible for the acquisition, installation, configuration, administration, maintenance, operation, and support of production hardware and software systems and services for the NCSA national user community. These systems range from the desktop to the supercomputers, staff user productivity software to high performance scientific applications, and both local area and wide area networking services. Sources for these production systems may be commercial vendors, external research and development activities, or internal development and integration as driven by relationships with NCSA’s partnering scientific communities. Key Responsibilities: Provide support to the Associate Director of PI and, in some areas, have direct responsibility for directing and managing the PI operational units, which report to the Associate Director. Supervise the work of assigned Division Directors and Technical Program Managers, Project Managers and others directly assigned. Provide leadership in identifying and developing outside collaborative projects and funding opportunities for PI as well as NCSA as a whole, including significant projects beyond the scope of internal funding constraints. Take lead role or participate in preparing proposals for such projects. Advise the Associate Director on a continuing basis as to the status of projects assigned to his/her area of responsibility. Be prepared to act as a proxy for the Associate Director Serve on the NCSA Steering Committee, the center’s senior leadership team. Participate in preparing and managing an operational budget for PI and advise the Associate Director on the allocation of resources necessary to meet the goals and objectives of the units. Develop and maintain a continuous flow of information to the PI directorate through various forms of communication, which will provide them with guidance and direction for planning and for current research projects. Advise the Associate Director on the development and revision of policy and procedures necessary to maintain and improve daily operations within the directorate. Work with key vendors to ensure that appropriate new technology is available on a timely basis for evaluation or joint development projects. Track research development in computational science external to the University and provide leadership in the development of staff with a vision toward the future of NCSA. Prepare and present professional papers at seminars, workshops and conferences. Coordinate with the Associate Directors, Division Directors and team leaders across the center to adequately prepare for and plan the transition of new cyberinfrastructure components from development to production environments and support. Similarly, coordinate to provide adequate staffing and required expertise for development project teams which may span multiple NCSA divisions and groups. Direct and support staff in the proper implementation of University policy and procedures. Perform other duties, as assigned, which are related to the position held in NCSA. Other duties as assigned. Required Education and Training: B.S. degree (M.S. or Ph.D. preferred) in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. Alternative baccalaureate degree fields will be considered/accepted if accompanied by equivalent experience (depending on nature and depth of experience as it relates to current NCSA technologies). Five years of scientific research in a computational environment. Successful record of acquiring funds from external sources for research Demonstrated experience in technical program management with a minimum of 7 years of experience. Knowledge necessary to write funding proposals and understand operations of federal, state and private funding agencies. Proven ability to manage and allocate budgets and human resources. Highly specialized knowledge of visualization, high performance computing and communications and information technologies.
