Paderborn University Deploys InfiniBand Cluster Network

SilverStorm Technologies, a leader in cluster networking for high performance business computing, announced today that Paderborn University has deployed SilverStorm's 9240 InfiniBand switch as the interconnect fabric for their Arminius high performance computing and visualization cluster. Located in Paderborn, Germany, the Arminius cluster is part of Paderborn University's Center for Parallel Computing and was constructed to provide on demand grid computing and visualization services in support of the university's research programs. The cluster is listed on the 2005 TOP500 supercomputer list as the 205th fastest supercomputer in the world. Arminius is a Linux network built using 200 INTEL Xeon and 8 AMD Opteron dual processor nodes. The high performance computing cluster provides over 2.5 Teraflops of peak processing capability. Paderborn selected SilverStorm Technologies' 9240 InfiniBand switch as their high speed interconnect solution over several competitive solutions. "To meet our objectives, our new network design demanded the use of best in class cluster elements. We evaluated several high speed interconnect alternatives and chose SilverStorm's switching solution because of its benchmark performance, reliability, and cost effectiveness," said Dr. Jens Simon, Technical Manager of Paderborn's Center for Parallel Computing. The SilverStorm 9xx0 series platform is the industry's most scalable InfiniBand switching solution providing users the highest port density available in a single chassis. The 9xx0 series provides users a 10 Gb/sec, low latency, multi-protocol interconnect fabric that supports cluster inter-process communication as well as virtual storage and networking I/O access.
