SC Global 2004 simultaneously links all inhabited continents

With the addition of Africa to the list of participating continents, SC Global 2004, the Access Grid-enabled component of SC2004, will include a first-ever demonstration of a simultaneous connection of AG nodes on all six inhabited continents. During SC Global 2003, 80 sites participated remotely, using Access Grid, inSORS Grid, Windows Media, and VBrick, from locations in 10 countries spread across five continents. This year's conference will be held November 6-12, 2004, in Pittsburgh, PA; remote participation is expected to exceed that of last year. “We’re very excited to have Polytechnic of Namibia joining us as the first SC Global participating site from Africa,” said Jackie Kern of NCSA, SC Global 2004 Chair. “With this addition, all continents – including Antarctica – will have participated in at least one SC Global event over the years.” SC Global Satellite Sites will have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of events during the conference, including: • Keynote address: Towards a Planetary Collaboratory, by Larry Smarr, Institute Director of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology: • Stereographics and Virtual Reality over the Access Grid • Advancing Technology in Native American Communities • LEAD: Linked Environments for Atmospheric Discovery • The MARCEL Network, a Global Faculty in Art & Science Sites wishing to participate remotely in SC Global 2004 should register at http://www.mcs.anl.gov/fl/events/scg2004/ before September 15, and will receive detailed information about technical preparations: In addition to the SC Global program of events, the SC Global committee will provide a Personal Video Room, with Access Grid and H.323 resources available for all registered conference attendees. Information on how to reserve use of these resources will be available on the SC Global 2004 web site.
