Sun Fire V880 Server Sets New 8-Way SAP-SD Performance Level

SANTA CLARA, CA -- Today Sun (Nasdaq: SUNW) revealed a new performance test with the two-tier SAP® -Standard Sales and Distribution (SD) Application benchmark running on the newly announced Sun Fire(TM) V880 server with 900MHz UltraSPARC(TM) III processors in combination with Sun StorEdge(TM) T3 arrays, supporting 600 SAP-SD benchmark users, 3,020 SAPS, with an average dialog response time of 1.96 seconds and 60,330 order line items per hour. These SAP-SD results deliver a significant price/performance advantage for joint SAP and Sun customers improving the TCO of SAP implementations over comparable systems. For more information on this benchmark see http://www.sap.com/benchmark . The SAP-Standard SD Application benchmark is a two-tier e-business test that is indicative of full business workloads of complete order processing and invoice processing, and demonstrates the ability to run both the application and database software on a single system. SAP-SD represents the critical tasks performed in real-world e-business environments. The Sun Fire V880 server shows that SAP two-tier workloads can be consolidated on a single server thus meeting the increasing demand for server consolidation to address server sprawl, simplify operations, and lower total cost of ownership. The Sun Fire V880 server supports 8 UltraSPARC III CPUs with up to 64 GB of memory. The result for the SAP R/3 release 4.6C Standard SD Application benchmark was achieved on an 8-way Sun Fire V880 server with 32 GB of memory, running the Solaris(TM) 8 Operating Environment and IBM DB2 UDB EE Database. This benchmark fully complies with SAP Benchmark Council's issued benchmark regulations and has been audited and certified by SAP. In addition to the SAP benchmark mentioned above, Sun has run other consolidation tests. In one test, three different applications were consolidated and managed on a single Sun Fire V880 system, which is not possible on platforms running Linux or PC servers. Results proved unprecedented server consolidation capability, memory and scalability through the Sun Fire V880 system. The Sun Fire V880 system has heightened functionality for users of critical e-business solutions including Customer Resource Management, Supply Chain Management, and Business Intelligence.
