ABERDEEN, MD -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) has been awarded $14 million from the Department of Defense High Performance Computing Modernization Office (HPCMO) at the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) in Aberdeen, Md. to more than double the computational capability of the laboratory's high performance computing environment to over 7.1 TeraFlops (7.1 x1012 floating point operations per second). Raytheon will acquire, install, test, and transition an 800- processor IBM Power4 - 1.3 GHz system. This acquisition and integration represents the single largest supercomputer that Raytheon will deliver to the ARL. This new IBM Power4 procurement is part of the HPCMO's TI-02 (Technology Insertion 2002). It will provide users with a significant increase in computational capability and will be three to four times faster than the two IBM Power3 systems it supersedes. This is the next increment in the ARL Major Shared Resource Center's (MSRC) enhancement as a leading computational science laboratory. Raytheon continues to be the integrator of choice at the ARL over the past six years. The company's ability to provide technical leadership in high performance computing, and to continually integrate and maintain these state- of-the-art systems has been recognized by DoD.
