Weather prediction 'on demand' by MeteoGalicia, CESGA
- Meteorological and oceanographical data models are processed daily by MeteoGalicia with the supercomputer 'Finis Terrae' at CESGA.
- Models are being developed for specific applications and end users such as percebeiros, ports or brotherhoods.
Weather prediction updates for any point Galicia in an instant via your mobile phone are now a reality with MeteoSIX Mobile application designed for the Galcian Weather Forecasts Service of the Department of Environment, CESGA and the universities of Santiago and A Coruña explained the director of MeteoGalicia Vicente Perez Muñuzuri.
MeteoGalicia and other predictions made by the large amount of data collected at multiple observation points are being processed at the Center for Supercomputing Galicia (CESGA).
One advantage of MeteoSIX Mobile, created with Android mobile operating system, is that we can quickly find the forecast for anywhere, land or at sea, although we do not know your name, as the mobile through the system GPS detects the place where you are and will get the weather forecast for that area.
Achieving a tight and precise predictions required is made possible by the large computational power of the supercomputer 'Finis Terrae' CESGA, which processed daily meteorological data and oceanographic models used by MeteoGalicia personnel. To extend MeteoGalicia application capabilities in the coming months, it is incorporating observational data, including radar weather and other programming on mobile platforms like the iPhone.
RAIA project: Galicia and Northern Portugal
In another recent project MeteoGalicia STRIPE (www.marnaraia.com), which has European funding through the Interreg Galicia-Northern Portugal, the models include not only the Galician territory but also the North of Portugal, and more particularly the coastal zone. Today thirteen partners are participating in the STRIPE with the ultimate goal of creating a marine and coastal observatory in which users can information of everything that happens in the ocean west of the Iberian Peninsula in the field of meteorology and oceanography.
The launch of several new buoys for data collection at sea, oceanographic models and new protocols will offer data exchange with more detailed information on water quality in the Galician coast, information suitable for the ports of interest, temperature or bathing water data the berthing of ships in ports or Northern Galician Luso. Currently the partners are developing specific applications for end users of these developments for percebeiros, ports or brotherhoods, among others.
