Freescale’s QorIQ Qonverge Base Station Processors Selected to Power Modular Small Cell Solutions from Public Wireless
Public Wireless has chosen to partner with Freescale Semiconductor to leverage market-leading QorIQ Qonverge processors for a new line of outdoor small cell base station solutions.
To be built on Freescale’s QorIQ Qonverge base station-on-chip technology, Venice Outdoor Multi-RAN products from Public Wireless offer OEMs a modular framework for the rapid development of highly efficient and compact small cell base stations designed to help service providers keep pace with rising wireless data rates and the explosion of smart mobile devices worldwide.
“Public Wireless has pioneered commercial outdoor small cell technologies since 2006, and Freescale is pleased QorIQ Qonverge base station-on-chips have been selected to power forthcoming Public Wireless solutions,” said Scott Aylor, general manager of Freescale’s Wireless Access Division. “Leveraging the simultaneous 3G and LTE transmission capabilities of QorIQ Qonverge processors, Public Wireless’ single and multi-mode small cell offerings are well suited to help transform the future of wireless infrastructure.”
Freescale’s QorIQ Qonverge products are based on a common architecture and integrate communications processing, digital signal processing and wireless acceleration technologies into a single system-on-chip in various configurations optimized for next-generation macrocell base stations. Advanced process technology and exceptional integration allow the convergence of multiple functions traditionally performed on separate FPGAs, ASICs, DSPs and processors to be incorporated on a single device. This integration lowers part counts and delivers significant power, cost and footprint reductions for base stations.
“We are delighted to integrate our small cell technology framework with Freescale’s QorIQ Qonverge architecture to provide next-generation small cell solutions to our customers,” said Murat Erkam, vice president of Product Management for Public Wireless, Inc. “This collaboration enables outstanding outdoor small cell RAN solutions with specialized functionality at the edge of the network for commercial, private, and military networks. Examples include support for multiple air-interface protocols, wireless backhaul, video optimization, localized RNC/EPC functionality, content caching, and several other applications.”
Public Wireless plans to showcase the Venice Multi-RAN platform in the Small Cell Zone (Booth 4861) at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center during the CTIA trade show, which runs from May 8 -- 10.
