Edge-Core Selects Vitesse for SMC Smart Enterprise Ethernet Networking Portfolio

Vitesse Semiconductor announced that Edge-Core, a professional networking solution provider, will use Vitesse's SimplyPHY 1GE PHYs and the SparX-III family of Gigabit Ethernet (GE) switches for its new family of SMC Smart L2 switch products. Edge-Core's new IPv6-ready switch platforms target high-performance, high-scalability small and medium Enterprise networks.

"Given our market success with prior generations of Vitesse products, they were the obvious choice for our latest suite of 10- to 50-port smart switch platforms, the SMCGS10C/10P-Smart to SMCGS50C/50P-Smart series," said Lucille Lu, marketing director at Edge-Core. "Our customers are demanding new capabilities for power efficiency, Quality of Service (QoS), security, and IPv6 readiness; Vitesse is able to support all our feature needs for multiple port-configurations with its 1GE PHY and GE Switch solutions. This functionality ultimately helps speed our time-to-market with cutting-edge solutions for the Edge-Core/SMC brand."

"Vitesse's SparX-III and SimpliPHY brands enable Edge-Core to make full use of the advanced features, BOM savings and energy efficiency that only Vitesse Ethernet solutions offer," said Uday Mudoi, director of product marketing at Vitesse. "Vitesse has long been a pioneer in delivering EEE technologies, such as EcoEthernet, to reduce power consumption in Ethernet networks. Our GE switch and PHY solutions help keep our OEM customers in front of market demands in all these critical areas. We are delighted to continue working with a market leader like Edge-Core to deliver the next-generation of green Enterprise networking solutions to the marketplace."

Energy Efficient, IPv6-Ready

The combination of SparX-III and SimpliPHY provides unprecedented power efficiency, offering a suite of EcoEthernet v2.0 and 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) features along with the ability for fanless operation. This functionality supports the widely adopted three-tier data center architecture consisting of Ethernet switches at access, aggregation, and core tiers. This architecture requires high density and scalability at all three tiers to minimize power consumption and mitigate rising costs and heat dissipation.

Vitesse has lead the way in moving beyond current-generation IPv4 support to offer dual-stack IPv4/IPv6 address support in its switches, making the SparX-III family truly "IPv6-ready." Dual address support schemes have been a "must have" requirement since early 2011 when all IPv4 addresses were officially exhausted. The switches also support secure telnet and secure web browsing functions.

The SparX-III family provides fine-grained QoS prioritization for smart switch applications, supporting eight priority queues per port and offering traffic policing, shaping, and scheduling.
