LSU Mathematics Professor Susanne C. Brenner Named Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics
Susanne C. Brenner, a professor in the LSU Department of Mathematics who holds a joint appointment with the LSU Center for Computation & Technology, or CCT, has been named a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, or SIAM.
SIAM is the premier scholarly organization for advancing applied mathematics and computational mathematics. It counts mathematicians, computational scientists and engineers from around the world among its members, who together explore new ways of applying mathematics to science, technology and industry.
This is the first year that the SIAM Fellows Program accepted nominations, selecting
34 international scholars who had demonstrated success and leadership in their professional work, research and educational outreach as the 2010 fellows. SIAM will officially recognize these individuals at the organization’s annual meeting this July in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Brenner, who has been with LSU since 2006, is the only fellow from a Louisiana college or university. According to the citation on the SIAM Web site, she is being recognized for “advances in finite element and multigrid methods for the numerical solution of partial differential equations.”
In 2005, Brenner received the prestigious Humboldt Research Award for senior U.S. scientists for her research. She serves on the editorial boards of nine journals and is the vice president for publications at SIAM.
Brenner has been named among LSU’s Rainmakers in 2008 and 2009. She serves as a founding faculty advisor of LSU’s SIAM student chapter and is also the founding faculty advisor for LSU’s Association for Women in Mathematics student chapter.
At CCT, where she is the first associate director for academic affairs, Brenner created the “Frontiers of Scientific Computing” lecture series, which brings world-renowned experts to campus to address a variety of topics in high-performance and scientific computing. She also leads research through the Core Computational Science Focus Area at CCT.
“Dr. Brenner is a leader not only in novel research for computational mathematics, but in mentoring junior faculty and students, inspiring them to develop new projects and programs,” said Stephen David Beck, CCT interim director. “We are proud to see her recognized among the group of SIAM fellows and congratulate her on this well-deserved honor.”
