Galicia, Extremadura reinforce their collaboration in the supercomputing field

The Supercomputing Center of Galicia (CESGA) and Extremeño Center for Research, Technological Innovation and Supercomputing (CénitS) will work together on the development of Computational Science and supercomputing services for the research community.

The Supercomputing Center of Galicia (CESGA) and the Foundation of Computing and Advanced Technologies Estremadura (COMPUTAEX) today signed a collaboration agreement in the field of supercomputing. In addition to existing agreements between the two organizations, they will bring a framework to develop joint activities in research.

This collaborative agreement will enable the extension and deepening the joint efforts of these two supercomputer institutions that manage large capacity shared memory, the Finisterrae (CESGA) and the recently opened LUSITANIA, Extremeño Center for Research, Technological Innovation and Supercomputing (CénitS) which manages the Foundation COMPUTAEX. These strategic computing infrastructure are key in supporting the development of research programs and technology innovation in their respective autonomy and Spain. Today's agreement includes specific actions for joint use of supercomputing resources for users of the two centers in the future, and to promote international mobility of scientists and technologists centers. In this phase they have set shared goals such as developing a training plan complementary to the centers, the implementation of joint plans for dissemination and popularization of High Performance Computing (HPC), the establishment of a plan to support users as a starting point for a future Technical Working Group international centers optimized resources and level of user satisfaction, and the elaboration of the mobility of researchers and technologists among centers.

COMPUTAEX aims the development of information technologies, the use of compute-intensive and advanced communications as tools to sustainable socioeconomic development, encouraging the participation of society with special attention to relations of cooperation between research centers public and productive private sectors. The recent inauguration in March 2009 with the supercomputer CénitS LUSITANIA, complements the supply of technology for the scientific community in Extremadura, which has one of the most sophisticated technological infrastructure at the moment, with two HP Integrity Superdome intimately coupled that incorporate a total 256 Intel Itanium2 processor cores and 2 TBytes central memory which makes it the largest Superdome shared memory per node in Spain.

For his part, CESGA depends on the Ministry of Economy and Industry of the Galicia and the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC). With 17 years of expertise, aims to promote, disseminate and provide services computation and communication intensive research communities and CSIC Galician, as well as those companies or institutions requesting them. Finisterrae, the supercomputer is managed by the CESGA, and recently included in the Scientific and Technological Facilities Map Singular (ICTS), Ministry of Science and Innovation, McInnes, and is an integrated system of 144 shared memory nodes and has a total of 20,000 GB main memory, 390,000 GB disk and 2,580 Itanium processors. The acquisition was supported Finisterrae the European Regional Development Fund, ERDF.

CESGA has collaboration agreements in similar terms with much of the Spanish center, as the Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Barcelona Supercomputing Center, BSC-CNS, the Scientific Computer Center of Andalusia, CICA, and the Supercomputing Center of Catalonia, CESCA .
