Luxtera Furthers Leadership with 40 Gbps Optical Active Cable

International SuperComputing Conference Booth #D31-D34: Silicon CMOS Photonics-Based Product Under Evaluation by Tier 1 OEM’s: Luxtera Inc., the world leader in Silicon CMOS Photonics, today announced that its 40 Gigabit Optical Active Cable (OAC), Blazar, is under evaluation by a number of Tier 1 OEMs in High Performance Computing, Enterprise and Proprietary Interconnect markets. Luxtera is also showcasing the product in the Mellanox Technologies booth at the International SuperComputing Conference. Luxtera’s OAC was first introduced in August 2007 and was demonstrated to the public last fall at SC07. Since then the product has been undergoing evaluation by customers with a number of those successfully completed to date. The product is ideally suited for InfiniBand and Ethernet applications in High Performance Computing (HPC) clusters and Enterprise data centers, and it is the optimal interconnect solution for the emerging 40G QDR applications. Enterprise data centers and HPC users gain 2x throughput and over 3x reach using Luxtera’s Blazar versus existing multimode fiber based interconnect. Users also gain 4x density improvement with one QSFP connector taking the same space as four XFP connectors. By utilizing breakthrough CMOS Photonics technology, Luxtera delivers these improvements in a single optoelectronic Silicon CMOS chip. This single chip QSFP solution enables utilization of mainstream, low-cost electronics-like fabrication, assembly and test processes for volume manufacturing of optical transceivers resulting in lower power, higher reliability and lowest cost products than traditional multi-chip VCSEL based solutions. “Luxtera is excited about the customer interest in its award-winning OAC. We were the first company to ship 40G OAC for field evaluations with positive results,” said Marek Tlalka, vice president of marketing for Luxtera. “Our breakthrough Silicon CMOS Photonics technology enables us to deliver the longest reach, highly reliable solution that will enable optical connectivity and price points comparable with legacy copper cabling.” “We are pleased to work with Luxtera on this demonstration of the 40G Optical Active Cable,” said Thad Omura, vice president of product marketing for Mellanox Technologies. “This technology is an important milestone for next generation InfiniBand deployments. With the introduction of its cable, Luxtera is playing a strong leadership role in this market.” Blazar was recently awarded with the Electronic Products’ Product of the Year, Electronic Design News’ Hot 100 Products of 2007 and the CONNECT Most Innovative Product.
