Department Description: The Computer Sciences and Information Technologies Center at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, California site seeks to enable the solution of national security problems through research, development, and application of computer science and information technology. The Scalable Computing Research and Development Department maintains expertise in many aspects of high performance computing, enabling it to conduct an integrated research program that can address the interplay of hardware, middle-ware, and applications in modern computing environments. Particular areas of expertise include lightweight operating systems, performance analysis tools, commodity cluster software stacks, storage, component architectures for scientific computing, nonlinear optimization, flexible frameworks for solving PDEs, and computational chemistry. Customers include the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing (SciDAC) program, the Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) program under the DOE’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), the Lab-Directed Research and Development (LDRD) program, and other Federal programs. Its work is performed in close partnership with Sandia organizations at our New Mexico location. Job Description: We are seeking a manager for the Scalable Computing Research and Development Department who will assume line management, as well as program management and development roles. The manager will be a champion for the technical relevance, excellence, and utilization of the department’s research. The manager will seek to maximize the impact of the department’s research portfolio, as well as develop new programs consistent with the goals of the laboratory. A key aspect of the success of the department is the ability to recruit and retain highly qualified staff. Thus, the manager must develop broad contacts in the relevant scientific communities to ensure access to highly qualified candidates. The selected manager must demonstrate a desire and ability to work in a team environment that includes the center’s management team, as well as managers and staff throughout Sandia. Required Criteria: Qualified candidates must possess an advanced degree or equivalent experience in computer science, engineering, or physical science. Other requirements include: (1) high performance computing expertise; (2) successful research and development contributions in a multidisciplinary environment; (3) demonstrated project management skills; and (4) demonstrated program leadership and active engagement in the computing community. Successful candidates must have strong interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to partner effectively, and be able to lead programs both internal and external to their organization. Desired Criteria: Moreover, experience in high performance computing, a Ph.D. in a technical field, and familiarity with the programs listed above are highly desired. Leadership roles in projects with research partners at universities, national laboratories, professional societies, and industry are also very beneficial.
