High-Performance Computing System Administrator
The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) Promotion Corporation is an Independent Administrative Agency established by the Government of Japan (www.oist.jp). Its aim is to establish a world-class university in science and technology in Okinawa. English will be the language of institution, and a large segment of the faculty and student population will be international. Currently, 17 Principal Investigators and a total of more than 100 scientists, students, and research support staff are located in temporary OIST Initial Research Project facilities in Uruma, Okinawa. This will expand to 20 Principal Investigators and their teams by the beginning of 2008. OIST is presently construction a new permanent campus in Onna village, on the west side of Okinawa Island, where there will be a major expansion of research support.
Duties and qualifications: OIST is seeking an experienced high-performance computing system administrator to provide technical leadership and oversight of leading-edge computational resources. This position will require providing system administration and technical support to faculty, students and research staff at OIST who wish to use high performance computers. In particular, duties will involve: life cycle management of high-performance computing (HPC) research infrastructure; programming and systems analysis tasks, testing and benchmarking; installing, configuring and maintaining new software on HPC of various architectures and operating systems. The HPC system administrator will have the opportunity to collaborate on research and application development, and migrate software systems to HPC cluster environments. Initially the HPC system administrator will also provide technical support for the OIST website. Qualifications:
BS or MS degree in science or engineering, and at least 6 (BS) or 3 (MS) years of Unix and Linux experience. Some experience managing or collaborating with technical staff and/or exposure to HPC systems or datacenters. Candidates should have experience in high-performance research computing and in-depth understanding of the following: queuing systems and schedulers; networking infrastructure issues and storage solutions related to HPC; system tuning, and data backup and security issues. Other desirable skills include familiarity with grid computing; application software configuration; compilers; parallel libraries; knowledge of high-level scripting languages such as Python and Perl; knowledge of web server technology; proficiency in project planning and project management; ability to work independently as well as collaborate with end users and other system administrators.
