CPU TECH Announces Breakthrough to Deeply Coupled Computing
CPU Technology, a leading-edge provider of high performance computing solutions, today announced at the SC2004 Conference a key breakthrough to Deeply Coupled Computing through use of the company's MPACx multiprocessor system infrastructure. This breakthrough will have a profound impact on the future of high performance general-purpose computing, giving birth to an era where any mainstream software application can be productively accelerated. In the near future, hundreds of deeply coupled 64-bit processors will fit compatibly onto a PC motherboard making parallel computing practical for everyone. Like the introduction of the microprocessor, Deeply Coupled Computing is an evolutionary step in computer science, made possible by System-on-Chip technology. Unlike today's connected clusters of computers which address a limited number of applications, Deeply Coupled Computing can be applied to any software program. For the first time large groups of processors can efficiently interact on different elements of the same problem. By unleashing the potential of parallel processors, Deeply Coupled Computing provides the basis for a new wave of industry-wide innovation and economic growth. "The integration of an entire multiprocessing node onto a single chip produces an order-of-magnitude improvement in price, performance, power efficiency and form factor for high performance computing systems," said Edward King, CPU TECH's CEO and Chairman. "This breakthrough in computer science enables new applications, such as mobile supercomputing, as it opens the door to system architects and developers to innovate beyond the microprocessor generation." Deeply Coupled Computing describes parallel processing architectures that provide for the complete interaction and synchronization of processors with latencies ranging from less than one millionth of a second on large-scale systems to instantaneous on-chip. The extremely low latencies inherent in Deeply Coupled Computers enable the practical realization of parallelism for increased application performance. CPU TECH's MPACx technology is a scalable and configurable inter-processor infrastructure which deeply couples arrays of multiprocessor nodes. Compared to tightly and closely coupled computing architectures, MPACx provides ultra-low system latencies and balanced scaling of on- and off-chip interaction bandwidth. The benefits of MPACx can be applied to a wide variety of processor types. MPACx is now available to CPU TECH's system and System-on-Chip development customers. Over the past decade, CPU TECH has amassed a significant portfolio of fundamental patents and intellectual property relevant to parallel processing and Deeply Coupled Computing. The company's research and development in fine-grain processing has been recognized by the U.S. Government's Office of Naval Research through its prestigious Dual-Use Science and Technology Achievement Award.
