Allinea to offer debugging and profiling tools for IBM Cell Broadband Engine

Allinea Software today announced plans to offer both its Distributed Debugging Tool (DDT) and its Optimization and Profiling Tool (OPT) on the IBM QS20 BladeCenter Cell Broadband Engine platform. In addition to the powerful features that DDT and OPT offer on other multi-core and multi-processor platforms, new features that are specifically designed for the IBM QS20 BladeCenter Cell Broadband Engine will be integrated into its products to further enhance the development environment. “We are delighted to be working with IBM to extend the capability of our tool suite for the IBM Cell Broadband Engine platform,” said Dr. Michael Rudgyard, CEO of Allinea. “DDT and OPT were developed from the ground up, with scalable parallel applications in mind, and they have seen broad adoption within the HPC community where these applications are the norm. New multi-core architectures like the Cell BE will help bring parallelism to the mass market. After all, a single IBM QS20 BladeCenter provides 2 Power Processing Elements (PPEs), each with two-way hardware multi-threading, as well as 16 Synergistic Processing Elements (SPE’s) – that’s 14 PPEs and 112 SPEs in a single 7U IBM BladeCenter Chassis! We believe that our tools are uniquely placed to help developers ride the new wave of parallelism, whether in HPC, digital content creation, image and signal processing, seismic processing or for consumer games applications.“ IBM already offers Allinea’s development tools on HPC systems that use AMD, Intel and IBM Power Architecture processors. DDT and OPT not only offer users a common interface across multiple processor architectures, but also across multiple operating systems, compilers, and languages, and support parallel computing paradigms such as MPI, OpenMP and threads. Allinea’s products are in use at commercial, government and academic sites worldwide, and set new standards for affordability and ease-of-use in parallel and multi-core programming. “Having Allinea Software’s growing family of tools, libraries and other enablement software as part of the Cell Broadband Engine ecosystem will certainly make it easier for application developers to collaborate and harness the power of the Cell architecture to speed solutions to market,” said Hina Shah, Director, Cell Ecosystem and Solutions Development, IBM.
