Slovenian Environmental Agency Implements Terrascale’s TerraGrid
Terrascale Technologies, a breakthrough developer of next generation input/output (I/O) software for cluster and grid computing, today announced that the Environmental Agency of Slovenia (EARS) has implemented TerraGrid software into its cluster computer infrastructure. The EARS supercomputer generates world class daily weather forecasts for central Europe. EARS was one of the first meteorological centers in Europe to successfully deploy a computer cluster for advanced weather forecasting. After a two-year search for an I/O solution that would interoperate seamlessly – and scale linearly – with their existing computer architecture, EARS selected Terrascale’s TerraGrid. The EARS cluster is running a numerical meteorological forecasting model called ALADIN, which was developed in collaboration with Meteo France and 15 other European national weather centers. TerraGrid is the “glue” that binds together commodity servers, networks and Open Source software, enabling sustained application performance levels previously attainable only on traditional expensive and proprietary systems. TerraGrid was installed by AGENDA d.o.o., a system integrator in Ljubljana, Slovenia with support from SCSuperComputingServices Ltd. in Munich, Germany. “Previously, the performance of our system decreased as the volume of data was increased,” said Jure Jerman, Deputy Director of the Meteorological Office, EARS. “With the integration of TerraGrid, overall system performance has been greatly accelerated and more clients are able to access the same data with increased efficiency. Additionally, TerraGrid reduces our I/O post-processing administration and it is remarkably simple to install and subsequently manage,” Mr. Jerman added. “The Environmental Agency of Slovenia is one of the most innovative meteorological organizations in the European Union,” said Gautham Sastri, President and CEO, Terrascale Technologies. “Driven by a commitment to leverage cutting edge technology and the responsibility to do so with maximum cost efficiency, EARS has proven that a TerraGrid-enabled computer cluster is an extremely efficient solution for massive scale data intensive applications. EARS’ ability to sell its services to neighboring EU countries is testament to the Agency’s commitment to excellence,” Mr. Sastri added.
