PSC Produces High-Resolution Forecasts for NOAA's Spring Program
As it has during many spring seasons over the past decade, PSC once again this spring collaborated with the Center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms (CAPS) at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, to produce real-time forecasts of storms in the Great Plains region. Relying on LeMieux, PSC's Terascale Computing System, the CAPS team produced the highest resolution storm forecasts that have yet been attempted. CAPs used the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF), an advanced model designed for U.S. research scientists, and with LeMieux running WRF on 307 nodes (1,228 processors) produced an on-time, real-time daily forecast from mid-April through early June.
