Cray Names New President and CEO

SEATTLE, WA -- Global supercomputer provider Cray Inc. (Nasdaq NM: CRAY) today announced that it has named Michael P. Haydock, a former IBM Global Services and Control Data executive, as its president and chief executive officer. In his new position, Mr. Haydock will lead Cray Inc.'s global operations and work with James Rottsolk, chairman, to expand the company's market presence as powerful new Cray supercomputer products now in development become available later this year and in 2002. "Mr. Haydock's highly relevant experience and track record make him the ideal operational leader at this important point in Cray Inc.'s evolution," said Mr. Rottsolk. "Mike most recently led a high-growth global operation for IBM. He is a noted authority on strategic marketing, has held senior roles in sales and application development, and has substantial experience in supercomputer markets. Mike has been a prior supercomputer user and shares a passion for improving science using supercomputing techniques and the value this capability brings to our Cray customers. I look forward to working with him." Mr. Rottsolk will focus on corporate strategy and relationships with major customers, investors and senior-level government officials. Cray Inc. was formed in April 2000 when Tera Computer acquired the assets of SGI's Cray Research business unit. Before joining Cray Inc., Mr. Haydock served as vice president of IBM Global Service's Sell & Support Solutions business unit, a worldwide operation that has grown rapidly and serves the technology needs of Chief Marketing Officers of major corporations. During his 12-year tenure at IBM (1989-2001), his other increasingly responsible management positions included leading a large global consulting practice focused on developing applications for commercial data mining and decision support. Mr. Haydock has also served as an executive building IBM's Business Intelligence business in Europe, Middle East and Africa while residing in Paris, France. From 1977 to 1989, Mr. Haydock held various marketing and sales positions at Control Data Corporation, culminating in roles as national accounts sales manager, manager of strategic marketing and, finally, director of Environmental Sciences and Emerging Technologies. This last position included primary responsibility for marketing and sales of supercomputers to weather and financial services organizations. Mr. Haydock has earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Florida Atlantic University and has completed postgraduate studies in banking at the Wharton School of Business and in marketing at the University of Minnesota. Mr. Haydock has a patent pending for his concept and solution of "horizontal marketing" and has been widely published on this and related topics using numerical methods to solve complex marketing challenges.
