Red Hat Enterprise MRG, Mellanox ConnectX-2 10GigE NICs Achieve New Performance Levels for Messaging, Realtime Grid Applications

Mellanox ConnectX-2 with RDMA over Ethernet (RoE) Enabled in Red Hat Enterprise Linux Delivers Out-of-the-Box Low-Latency and Efficient Scaling Benefits to Cloud Computing and Data Center Fabrics

Red Hat and Mellanox Technologies have announced that Red Hat Enterprise MRG with the open Advanced Messaging Queuing Protocol (AMQP) standard and Red Hat Enterprise Linux achieved Ethernet-based data center fabric performance, delivering a 42 percent reduction in latency using Mellanox ConnectX-2 with RDMA over Ethernet (RoE), with throughputs up to 1.2 million acknowledged messages per second, with latencies in the 10 microseconds range in tests conducted by Red Hat. Such performance is critical for financial institutions and other enterprise applications for which every millisecond of improved latency translates to significant dollars in potential increased profitability. By enabling support for ConnectX-2 with RoE in Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Red Hat is enabling easier deployment of such high-performing systems, further improving return-on-investment for end users.

Many enterprise and cloud workloads have extremely demanding requirements for determinism – to ensure predictable response times and service levels. Today's complex IT infrastructure requires many components to work well together to form a complete application stack that delivers that level of performance. The foundation layer consists of verified real-time capable hardware combined with the MRG Realtime kernel and Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating system environment. Above the foundation are essential mid-tier components like real-time Java runtime, messaging, grid scheduling that Red Hat provides and high-performance connectivity solutions from Mellanox.

“There is a growing class of enterprise and cloud applications that have demanding time constraints and scaling requirements that are unable to be satisfied with general-purpose operating systems and I/O technologies,” said Tim Burke, vice president, Platform Engineering at Red Hat. “By delivering an integrated high-performing, standards-based Red Hat and Mellanox solution, we are enabling IT organizations to reduce costs, while providing the value of realtime access to information in broad markets, such as financial services, telecommunications and a large variety of real-time Java applications.”

RDMA over Ethernet (RoE) is an add-on feature to Mellanox’s ConnectX-2 adapters that implements the IBTA’s RoCE (RDMA over Converged Ethernet) standard and utilizes the popular OpenFabrics Enterprise Distribution (OFED) and application programming interfaces (APIs). The ConnectX-2 with RoE adapter delivers up to 1/10th the latency at the OFED API level, saves power consumption and delivers improved economics compared to other standards-based 10 Gigabit Ethernet adapter solutions in the market. ConnectX-2 with RoE supports 40 Gigabit Ethernet today.

“Low-latency in data center fabrics can benefit application performance and scalability enabling organizations and cloud service providers to deliver higher service levels to their users,” said Sujal Das, senior director of product management at Mellanox Technologies. “We are extremely pleased to offer this joint Red Hat Enterprise MRG, Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Mellanox ConnectX-2 based solution to OEMs and end-users that value IT as a competitive edge and need to see immediate results when using a solution.”
