Purpose of position: This position will support and collaborate with DoD Climate-Weather-Ocean (CWO) computational scientists as part of the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) participation in the HPCMPO PET Program. Essential functions: Porting of codes to High Performance Computing (HPC) systems and optimization of codes for these systems. Implementation of new/improved scalable algorithms for CWO codes. Integration of new academic computing technologies such as programming tools, scientific visualization techniques, data-intensive computing and data assimilation techniques, portal interfaces, and Grid computing tools. Training in new HPC techniques and technologies. Collaborative research and development activities in CWO topics. Co-authoring papers with DoD CWO researchers; giving technical presentations on techniques for CWO and results of CWO projects. Marginal/Incidental functions: Other related functions as assigned. Required qualifications: Master's degree in mathematics, applied mathematics, science, or engineering. Proficiency with programming languages such as Fortran or C for scientific applications on Unix systems. Education and/or professional experience in climate or ocean modeling, atmospheric physics, weather simulation, meteorology, or a related field of computational science such as CFD OR education and/or professional experience in computer science/scientific computing. Professional demeanor and communication skills. U.S. citizenship and eligibility to obtain a DoD 'Secret' security clearance. ***Selected candidate will be appointed to the title "Research Scientist" or "Research Associate" based on a review of research accomplishments and professional experience and qualifications.*** Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. Preferred qualifications: Doctoral degree in mathematics, applied mathematics, science, or engineering, especially in a field related to CWO modeling or in computer science; two or more years of post-doctorate experience in a research environment; experience in developing MPI applications for parallel computing systems; experience with shared-memory parallel computing systems using OpenMP; expertise in numerical linear algebra and numerical analysis; experience with scripting languages and queueing systems; experience with ensemble modeling; history of publishing results (more than three publications) in computational science or computer science.
