Novell and Voltaire Partner on Real-Time Trading

SUSE Linux Enterprise Real-Time To Include InfiniBand; Companies To Jointly Offer Premium Support Packages for Enterprise Customers: Voltaire, a provider of grid backbone solutions, today announced that it has entered into an agreement with Novell to offer a joint low latency solution to improve performance of real-time trading applications in the financial markets. The combined solution reduces latency bottlenecks on both the operating system level and the data center fabric to offer a low latency solution. In addition, the solution is coupled with a support package that provides comprehensive support for both the operating system and InfiniBand capabilities allowing customers to take advantage of improved performance and the highest levels of availability. The solution addresses one of financial services firms' key information technology challenges: achieving lower latency for market data and trading applications. Competitive advantage in the financial services industry is dictated by the ability to process as many messages per second as possible and at the lowest latency. "We are very pleased to be partnering with Novell to serve the needs of the financial services community," said Patrick Guay, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Voltaire. "By reducing latency at both the server processing level and in the server I/O and fabric, financial services firms can accelerate performance of their critical real-time trading applications and improve the bottom line." The combined solution consists of SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time, Voltaire Grid Backbone InfiniBand-based switching solutions, OpenFabrics Enterprise Edition (OFED) 1.2 InfiniBand software and additional enterprise-focused functionality from Voltaire. SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time, which provides predictable performance in time-critical environments, is designed for a broad range of deterministic applications, including financial trading, telecommunications, modeling, simulation, data acquisition, industrial control and medical imaging systems. Voltaire solutions provide 10 or 20 Gbps bandwidth utilizing InfiniBand and RDMA technology to deliver superior message delivery rates and significantly lower latency and CPU overhead. The solution integrates the industry-standard, open source OFED 1.2 InfiniBand software deep into the SUSE operating system to increase messages per second and reduce overall system latency for faster data processing. To further extend the InfiniBand performance benefits, Voltaire is providing additional software packages to bring application acceleration and high availability to the InfiniBand fabric. The Voltaire solution is also available for Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 for customers who do not require real-time capabilities in the operating system but still need high-throughput with the reliability of lossless data transfer. "The combination of Voltaire InfiniBand-based switching and software solutions and Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time creates the ideal platform for applications that require deterministic low latency performance and high-bandwidth system interconnects," said Moiz Kohari, VP of Engineering, Novell. Novell will offer premium enterprise support packages for InfiniBand whereby first-tier customer support will be provided by Novell and tier 3 support will be provided by Voltaire. Availability The solution will available when Novell releases its maintenance upgrade to SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time in July.
