Jacobs most recently was the division's deputy director and also headed ESD's program development. He replaces Steve Hildebrand, who retired. He joined ORNL in 1983 in the division's earth sciences section. He was named leader of the subsurface and surficial geochemistry group in 1988 before heading the earth and engineering science section in 1995. He was named deputy division director in 1998. Jacobs has worked on a variety of research and development projects in carbon sequestration, environmental engineering, microbial biogeochemistry and remediation technologies. He has authored more than 60 publications and reports. As division director, Jacobs plans to continue his involvement with DOE's programs in ecosystems and research in ecosystem and global change science, remediation science and genomics. Jacobs earned a bachelor's degree in 1976 in geology from the University of Vermont and a doctorate in 1981 in geochemistry from The Pennsylvania State University. Jacobs' wife, Karen, teaches computer skills at Oak Ridge's Willow Brook Elementary School and is an assistant cross-country coach at Oak Ridge High School. They have two children -- Luke, a student at the University of Tennessee, and Chelsea, who attends Appalachian State University. The Jacobs lived in Oak Ridge for 18 years. They now reside in Louisville.
