Deadline Extended for Submitting Papers, Panels, Workshop to Tapia Celebration

“While the response we’ve received to the call for participation has been gratifying, we are hoping that this extension will further broaden the program,” said Conference General Chair Pamela Williams of Sandia National Laboratories. While the program will cover technical areas, the conference is aimed at providing a supportive networking environment for under-represented groups across the broad range of computing and information technology, from science to business to the arts to infrastructure. Tapia 2005 is co-sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery and the IEEE Computer Society, in cooperation with the Computing Research Association. Papers, Panels and Workshops Submissions Researchers are invited to submit papers to Tapia 2005 in the following areas of interest: • Collaborative and Emerging Technologies • Computational Mathematics and Science • Multidisciplinary Activities in Computer Science Prospective authors are invited to submit extended abstracts of no more than four pages, single-spaced in 12-point type size, including results, figures and references. All papers must be submitted electronically. Proposals are also invited for panels focusing on technical areas or issues related to increasing diversity in the field of computing. Panel proposals should be no more than one page, single-spaced in 12-point type size. Finally, proposals are invited for workshops focusing on issues related to increasing diversity in the field of computing. Workshop proposals should be no more than two pages, single-spaced in 12-point type size. Details about electronic submission can be found on the conference Web site at: http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/Conferences/Tapia2005/cfp.html. Extended abstracts should be submitted by Friday, April 8, 2005. Authors will be notified of acceptance decisions by June 3, 2005. Posters and Birds-of-a-Feather (BoF) Submissions Students are encouraged to submit abstracts of no more than 150 words for posters focusing on late-breaking research results. BoF proposals should include an abstract on the topic of the BoF, the expected audience for the BOF session, and a brief summary on the qualifications of the organizer who will lead the BOF session. Abstracts and proposals should be submitted by Friday, May 6, 2005. Authors will be notified of acceptance decisions by June 17, 2005. Doctoral Consortium Submissions The Doctoral Consortium provides an opportunity for Ph.D. students to present, discuss and explore their research interests and career objectives with a panel of established researchers. Application packages should be submitted no later than Friday, May 6, 2005. More information can be found at: http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/Conferences/Tapia2005/cfp.html. The Tapia conference series honors the significant contributions of Richard A. Tapia, a mathematician and professor in the Department of Computational and Applied Mathematics at Rice University in Houston, Texas. He is internationally known for his research in computational and mathematical sciences and is a national leader in education and outreach programs. Tapia has authored or co-authored two books and more than 80 mathematical research papers. His current positions at Rice are Noah Harding Professor of Computational and Applied Mathematics; Associate Director of Graduate Studies, Office of Graduate Studies; and Director of the Center for Excellence and Equity in Education. The Tapia conference series enjoys the support of a number of academic, research and business organizations. The University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, the Computer Science Department at UI Urbana-Champaign, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications and Sandia National Laboratories have already committed support for Tapia 2005.
