Pharsight Expands Drug Development Consulting Team

Dr K-Wagg, a former recipient of the prestigious Howard Hughes Medical Institute Post-Doctoral Fellowship for Physicians, brings 18 years of experience applying simulation and information technologies to solve complex life science problems. His simulation experience spans both the pre-clinical and clinical phases of life science research and development. Current areas of consulting include: integration of clinical and pre-clinical compound data to better inform lead selection and optimize decision making; image management and analysis with emphasis on cell-based screening data; reconstruction of biochemical pathways from genomic, proteomic and related data with subsequent pathway analysis for target identification and validation; and clinical trial simulation with emphasis on cardiovascular and infectious diseases. Over the years he has consulted to prestigious academic institutions including The Rockefeller University and Columbia University as well as numerous life science companies. Since 1991, he has served as a consultant to Simulation Resources Inc., a developer of solutions for modeling complex biological systems, based in Redlands, California. From 2003 to 2004, he also consulted to the Bioinformatics Research Group at SRI in Menlo Park, California (Microbial Genome Analysis), Scimagix Inc. in San Mateo, California (Management and Analysis of Cell-based Screening Data) and the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois, in Lausanne, Switzerland (Development of a Clinical Research DB). Prior to this, Dr. K-Wagg was CEO of Zephra, a San Francisco based company providing software solutions for secure management and analysis of life science research and development data. "We are pleased to welcome Jon to our consulting team," said Shawn O'Connor, president and chief executive officer of Pharsight. "We believe Jon's vast experience in applying mathematics and simulation data analysis methods along with his consulting experience will allow him to contribute meaningfully to our consulting team. In addition, Jon's practical experience in helping pharmaceutical and biotech companies to optimize their approach to drug development will be a strong value-add for our clients." Jon received his Ph.D., Physiology/Biophysics, M.B.B.S. in Medicine, and Bachelors of Medical Science, from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. He first came to the United States in 1986, as a visiting graduate student at the National Biomedical Simulation Resource at Duke University. In 1988, Dr. K-Wagg was a founding member of the Center for Biomedical Simulation in Australia. In 1990, he was a Guest Investigator in the Laboratory of Cardiac Physiology at The Rockefeller University. He began his post-doctorate scientific career as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Physician Fellow at The Rockefeller University in New York, NY. Following this post, he moved to the position of Senior Bioinformatics Scientist at Pangea Systems/Double Twist. He has been published widely in numerous journals including Nature, Nature Genetics, Trends in Biotechnology, the Journal of Theoretical Biology and Genome Biology. His most recent publication "The Complete Genome Sequence of Francisella Tularensis, The Causative Agent of Tularemia" was published in Nature Genetics in January 2005.
