State of Kansas Transforms Next-Generation Network
The Kansas Board of Regents, which oversees the Kan-ed network project, selected the Juniper Networks M7i routing platform based on its ability to deliver high performance filtering, multicast, Quality of Service, security, IPv6, VPNs, and MPLS in a compact and cost-effective package. The M7i will be deployed at network access points that link remote facilities to the Kan-ed network where MPLS-based routing platforms are required to support advanced traffic engineering with efficient use of network bandwidth, security and network reliability. "The decision to work with Juniper Networks was based on the high performance, reliability, security and services features of its solutions, as well as its proven track record in the research and education market," said Bradley S. Williams, director of information technology for the Kansas Board of Regents. "With Kan-ed we can now expand the role of education and healthcare in communities across the state and bring knowledge into the reach of all the people of Kansas." Besides providing civic, educational and medical services to state residents, the Kansas Board of Regents designed the network to stimulate scientific advancements by giving researchers and others throughout the state the ability to collaborate and share large files, regardless of where facilities are geographically located. Network access points will be established across the state to create a public/private partnership to address the diverse needs of schools, libraries and hospitals. The Kan-ed project enables the state to transform and connect multiple, disparate networks into a single multi-service network or infranet. "The Kan-ed project is a great example of how government can lead the way with technology innovation to advance learning, scientific discovery, and collaboration," said Pradeep Sindhu, vice chairman, chief technology officer, and founder of Juniper Networks. "The Kan-ed network is an early example of an infranet -- an IP/MPLS-based network that is secure, reliable, and can deliver high quality to multiple applications.
