New Brunswick/PEI Research Grid Provides Limitless Capacity for Research

"We are very pleased that the strength of our backbone has helped realize one of the most advanced research networks in Canada,” said Paul Hatcher, the company’s senior vice president, Canadian Sales and Marketing. “The result enables increased capabilities for regional research and education in New Brunswick. The success of this initiative demonstrates Group Telecom’s continued ability to develop innovative, customized solutions for organizations.” Group Telecom’s deployment of Nortel 1600 G Optera DWDM equipment across New Brunswick, marks the largest and most aggressive project in the company’s history with respect to the scope, the timeframe in which it was delivered, and the capital spent. The Research Grid provides capacity 40 times greater than its previous level. It can handle 52 million voice lines; it provides 19 additional communities with access to full rate Gigabit Ethernet; and is capable of connecting any point in New Brunswick to any point in North America at 10 Gigabit capacity. The partnership consortium that built the NB/PEI Research Grid also includes CANARIE, the National Research Council, the province of New Brunswick, the University of New Brunswick and the Educational Computing Network, consisting of the University of New Brunswick, Université de Moncton, Mount Allison University and Saint Thomas University.
