Computing Sciences Public Affairs Specialist

Job CS/19283/WCS -- POSITION SUMMARY: The Berkeley Lab Computing Sciences Directorate is seeking a full time communications specialist to develop and carry out a range of communications projects for various audiences. DUTIES: Required -- Reporting to the communications manager in the Laboratory's Computing Sciences Directorate, the successful candidate will work independently and under limited direction to create and distribute a wide range of communications projects, including news releases, special reports, Web pages, presentations, newsletters, booth displays and meetings. The successful candidate will work with staff and managers to identify, develop, research and produce timely and effective communications tailored for various audiences. The successful candidate will also respond to media inquiries and initiate contact with media to generate coverage of newsworthy subjects. Additionally, this position will provide support for participation in conferences. Topics to be covered include high-performance computing, networking, computational science, organizational achievements and general research. This position will require working at both the main Lab site in Berkeley and the supercomputing center in downtown Oakland. QUALIFICATIONS Required -- BS degree in Journalism or Communications or equivalent experience plus 5 years of professional experience in technical or non-technical writing, editing, layout, and production. Proven experience in writing interesting, journalistic-style articles, newsletters and/or specialized reports. Experience in writing about high-performance computing, networking and/or science and in media relations with the technology media. Overall proven ability to use different media to effectively communicate with different audiences. Experience in setting and adhering to publication schedules and meeting deadlines. Excellent writing skills, with speed and accuracy, and working knowledge of electronic and print publishing and design. Excellent verbal skills. Strong interpersonal communication skills. Ability to work cooperatively and productively. Demonstrated ability to work successfully as a member of a team of individuals in which cooperation and interaction are implicit in the work. Desired -- Knowledge of science, Berkeley Lab, the University of California and the U. S. Department of Energy would be pluses. POSTING DATE: July 13, 2006 CLOSING DATE: Open until filled.
