Coraid Introduces High Availability For Unlimited Capacity Linux Storage

Coraid, the Linux Storage People, introduced fail-over capability for their Linux NAS Gateway products. With virtually limitless capacity, the latest series of AoE (ATA-over-Ethernet)-based storage now offers high availability for one-tenth the price of other systems that target Linux enterprises. The newly available Coraid Linux NAS with fault tolerant redundancy debuted at the LinuxWorld Expo in Boston, MA. “As market demands for expandable storage strategies continue to explode, we have tailored our unlimited capacity NAS Gateway to address key customer needs,” said Jim Kemp, CEO of Coraid. “Our latest introductions are based on open standards and designed for those customers in need of achieving the most granular levels of data storage that are flexible and fault tolerant, at an unprecedented low cost.” Traditionally, the typical Network Attached Storage (NAS) system incorporates an NFS/CIFS file sharing server and RAID storage in a monolithic unit with a fixed number of disks. When storage becomes full, data must be moved to a larger capacity NAS platform or additional NAS servers must be acquired. Both options are expensive and introduce complexity into the network. Coupled with EtherDrive Storage, Coraid's Linux NAS Gateway simplifies storage. By separating RAID-based storage from the file sharing server using standard Ethernet, disk storage can be expanded almost infinitely by adding more Ethernet-connected disks. By adding fault tolerance, the new Coraid CLN20-FT offers redundancy with hot failover. This configuration provides seamless protection for NFS and CIFS clients using the file sharing services of the NAS, with no single point of failure. Coraid, the originator of the ATA-over-Ethernet (AoE) for Linux, leverages cost advantages of Ethernet and eliminates the unnecessary overhead of TCP/IP for a simple, scalable, affordable alternative to iSCSI or Fibre Channel. The CLN20-FT Redundant Linux NAS Gateway is now shipping and lists for $5,985. The CLN20-FT combines two CLN20's with a 1U rack mountable unit power switchover control unit. It is compatible with standard Linux and provides connection to an unlimited number of EtherDrive Storage devices.
