Mellanox Opens Messaging Accelerator Source Code to Developer Community

Messaging accelerator software enables extremely low latency for message-based and streaming applications over Mellanox InfiniBand and Ethernet adapters

Mellanox Technologies has announced the availability of its Messaging Accelerator (VMA) as an Open Source software platform for message-based and streaming network socket applications. VMA Open Source allows application developers to work within the VMA developer community to fully customize their application software source code and achieve optimal configurations that will boost performance, lower latency and increase transactions per second. In addition, VMA Open Source provides end-users with a significant reduction in solution cost of over 30 percent.

VMA Open Source delivers performance boosts for a wide-array of network socket applications including financial services, Web 2.0, medical online web services, imaging, radar and other data acquisition systems. VMA provides low latency of 1.5us for a TCP socket-based application and 1.1us for UDP. In addition, VMA delivers more than 4 million multicast packets ingress in a single thread. The result is a reduction in latency by as much as 300 percent and an increase in application throughput by as much as 200 percent per server, as compared to alternatives.

“By opening VMA source code we enable our customers with the freedom to implement the acceleration product and more easily tailor it to their specific application needs,” said Tom Thirer, director of product management at Mellanox Technologies. “We encourage our customers to use the free and open VMA source package and to contribute back to the community.”

VMA Open Source is made available under a dual license – GPLv2 and commercial – and can be downloaded for free download from Google Code at https://libvma.googlecode.com/. Mellanox will continue to take an active part in the VMA Open Source community by providing further enhancements that facilitate increased development and deployment of the project. Mellanox will continue to provide support services for the VMA binary package, available at www.mellanox.com/vma.
