Barco introduces enhanced Galaxy 4K projector range for virtual reality markets
Answering the need for higher stereo resolution in virtual reality applications, Barco, a world leader in professional visualization solutions, introduces its enhanced Galaxy 4K projector range. Capable of showing content with 4K resolution in both mono and stereo up to 120 Hz, the Galaxy 4K range ensures excellent response times for any user interaction. This new offering will be available as of Q1 2014. Barco’s Galaxy 4K series consists of three models – Galaxy 4K-12, 4K-23 and 4K-32 – boasting light output of 12,000 lumens, 23,000 lumens, and 32,000 lumens, respectively. With their high resolution, superb brightness and ultimate image quality, the Galaxy 4K range quickly became the standard projector for demanding virtual reality applications.
In line with today’s customer needs, this projector range has now been significantly enhanced to respond more quickly to user interactions via tracking systems or haptic devices. In addition, stereo content can now be visualized at full native 4K resolution (instead of reverting to 2K resolution). Last but not least, by using the new DisplayPort 1.2 inputs, the color accuracy has been increased from 8bit/color to 12bit/color depth.
Building on proven technology
Customers who have already invested in a Galaxy 4K projector can benefit from these improvements by means of an onsite upgrade with minimum downtime. The projector can remain in its position, which avoids labor-intensive realignment. What’s more, Barco has also upgraded its MCM-400 high-quality warping and blending processor to support 4K resolution at higher frame rates and color depth, making it possible to build systems consisting of multiple Galaxy 4K projectors.
Next to its superb performance as a standalone projector, the Galaxy 4K has also been optimized for use in multi-channel configurations, including extremely high-resolution powerwalls, caves, etc. Using advanced technology like Constant Light Output (which maintains a uniform brightness level over the complete system), the Galaxy 4K series can create very stable high-resolution projection areas. Furthermore, the Galaxy 4K’s fully sealed DMD chip and optical engine prevent any dust from entering the projector’s critical components. This means that the quality of the display is guaranteed for a longer time with less maintenance.
One projector for a superb 3D experience
The Galaxy 4K series was built specifically for the VR market, and is therefore optimized for projecting 3D stereo images in full 4K resolution. This can either be done with Active Infitec technology (for large groups) or by using active shutter glasses (for small groups). In both cases, only one projector and a standard screen are needed, so that existing infrastructure can be reused optimally. Of course, it is also possible to display crystal-clear mono images as well.
“The support for native 4K stereo images on a single Galaxy 4K is a new milestone in VR immersion,” says Product Manager Stefan Vandemaele. “Users can experience images in extremely high resolution, with very fast reaction times, which results in the most realistic representation of VR content today. This projector series builds on Barco’s expertise in developing high-performance projectors for the VR and Digital Cinema markets, offering the highest image quality, perfect stability and best value for money. The possibility to upgrade the existing Galaxy 4K projectors clearly shows Barco’s dedication to maximizing the customer’s initial investment.”
