NEC adds new Intel processor-based servers
New green rack server and 4-socket blade servers bring NEC quality, value and function to address the broader spectrum of enterprise data center needs: NEC Corporation of America, a premier provider of IT, network and identity management solutions, today rolled out a new green server, added a new 4-socket blade server, and announced plans to further extend the industry’s broadest line of Intel processor-based servers. A leading brand in Japan and Europe, NEC has been an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of servers in North America for 15 years. Approximately one of every three data centers is estimated to have an NEC server under another brand name. NEC provides a complete server product line, for the small to large enterprise, with highly reliable, high performance, scalable offerings ideal for general business applications, data center solutions, and transaction processing. NEC offers the broadest line of high quality, highly functional Intel-based servers at aggressive price points. NEC is the global leader in designing and delivering Intel Xeon processor-based fault tolerant (FT) servers -- a flagship server in NEC’s broad server product line. NEC’s fault-tolerant servers deliver exceptional up-time through dual modular hardware redundancy. All hardware components, including CPU and memory, are replicated to run in lockstep. If any hardware component fails in one module, processing continues uninterrupted in the other module without downtime and loss of data. Such high availability is proving to be extremely valuable in data centers running virtualization hypervisors, where otherwise all the applications running on the single server virtual machines would be at risk during a hardware fault. “Our primary business has always been to provide high quality, competitively priced stampings and engineered assemblies to our customers. Prior to deploying NEC's fault tolerant servers, Progressive Stamping was faced with the challenge of keeping all of our data highly available, including customer information,” said Mike McDermott, electrical engineer, Progressive Stamping, Inc. "With NEC's FT servers, we have been able to achieve continuous availability of all of our internal and customer data allowing our business to run smoothly 24 by 7." “Fault tolerant hardware technology can offer a highly cost-effective approach to enterprise-level high availability and is becoming increasingly important in a virtualized environment,” said Jeffrey Hewitt, research vice president, Server Markets, Gartner, Inc. “High availability servers, as well as power efficient technologies such as green and blade servers are elements of the market that are helping to drive server sales.” “NEC continues to deliver to the North American enterprise market the latest advances of a dynamic IT infrastructure. We are demonstrating this with the new 4-Socket Blade, the new energy efficient Express5800 i-Series server and our Series3800 SME server product line. We’re also planning to address the low-end server requirements of small enterprises in the near future,” said Marc Hafner, vice president of departmental servers, IT Platform Group, NEC Corporation of America. “With NEC’s suite of servers, we provide the broadest offering of high quality, high value Intel processor-based servers which represents an incredible contrast in sophistication, power and price point to other vendors. NEC gives its customers an advantage of improved energy efficiencies, virtualization, high availability and greater functionality, today.” New NEC Servers Energy Efficient Server Saves Power The NEC Express5800/i120Ra-e1 server is designed for businesses of any size with the desire to become more energy efficient. The first server in NEC’s i-Series product line, the i120Ra-e1 is designed with the new Intel low-power chip, lower power-consuming memory, and a redesigned power supply. The result is improved power efficiencies in a lightweight, compact 1U chassis. This server is perfect for optimizing data center efficiency and is essential for businesses looking to minimize environmental impact. Key features include: * Maximum power consumption as compared to 1U rack mounted conventional servers is 330 watts vs. 680 watts, with 2 CPUs in use. * Up to two Multi-Core Intel Xeon low-voltage power-efficient processors. * Support for 3.5-inch Serial Attached SCSI and Serial ATA disk drives with optional RAID 5 capability * The capability to remotely operate the server and monitor the health of server components, even when the server is powered off. * Support for the most common operating systems including Microsoft Windows Server 200X, VMware ESX, and a variety of Linux distributions such as RedHat, SUSE and Fedora. High Memory, 4-Socket Blade Server Ideal for Virtualization Designed for the enterprise, the new NEC Express5800/140Ba-10 assimilates the latest high density mounting technology along with superior reliability and availability. This new 4-Socket blade is unique to the market because it includes 16 DIMM memory sockets for up to 64GB memory and is ideally suited for virtualization applications. The introduction of this new 4-Socket Blade rounds out NEC’s already extensive line of servers to position NEC’s blade server family as one of the most comprehensive available. All of NEC’s blade servers are powered by multi-core Intel Xeon processors offering robust server performance along with outstanding memory and I/O scalability. These servers are specifically designed for data center solutions running the most popular operating systems, allowing IT departments to easily run clustered and standard applications. SigmaBlade servers also support popular hypervisor solutions making the data center dynamic, manageable, and energy efficient. These functional capabilities, combined with NEC's rich heritage and leadership in supercomputing, mainframe, and fault tolerant technology, make NEC SigmaBlade servers the highest quality blade servers in the market. Pricing and Availability The Express5800/i120Ra-e1 is priced comparable to a two-socket 1U server and will be available in October. The Express5800/140Ba-10 is priced comparable to four-socket rack mounted servers, and is sold as a base unit plus standard server components for memory, hard disks, and add-on cards as needed. The 140Ba-10 is also available in October. NEC servers are available through selected resellers and direct from NEC Corporation of America.
