Applied Research Associates Uses TotalView Debugger
TotalView Enables Southwest Division of Applied Research Associates to Reduce Development Times by at Least a Factor of Three: TotalView Technologies, the world’s leading provider of scalable debugging and analysis software solutions for the multi-core era, today announced that Applied Research Associates (ARA) has chosen to use its TotalView Debugger to streamline the development of software applications. Since ARA developers in the company’s Southwest division began using the TotalView Debugger, software development times have been reduced by at least a factor of three. Applied Research Associates provides innovative, in-depth and diversified research, engineering and technical support to clients in government and industry. The Southwest Division of ARA produces software and calculations/analyses for customers that include Defense Department agencies, primarily the Defense Threat Reduction Agency. “Development of parallel MPI code would be extremely difficult without an interactive debugger,” said Hank Happ, principal scientist at Applied Research Associates. “Once we determined that TotalView was the only effective debugger for handling MPI applications, using it was a no-brainer. In fact, when we recently obtained a new machine, I would not use it for development until we had successfully installed TotalView on it.” With increasing competition and reduced federal funding for military research, it is more important than ever that ARA programmers have access to the most scalable, reliable and effective tools available to help them to develop highly-specialized software applications efficiently and effectively. Without an advanced multi-core debugging tool like the TotalView Debugger, the company could face problems such as slower development times and potential quality issues, which would lead to budget overruns and frustrated developers. Additionally, ARA estimates that the cost of code development for its customers would be about twice as much as it is with TotalView. TotalView is the most advanced multi-core debugger for Linux, UNIX, and Mac OS X and is the market leader in C/C++, FORTRAN, UPC, MPI/Open MP and parallel programming debugging. It was designed from the ground up to handle the complexities of the world’s most demanding multi-processing applications that scale to thousands of processes and threads with applications distributed over multiple machines or processors. TotalView offers many advanced features, including multi-language support and built-in source code and memory debugging capabilities, which streamline and simplify the development process. TotalView has made it possible for ARA developers to significantly speed their development times, as well as to improve the quality of their software products. “Our customers continually communicate to us the benefits of the TotalView Debugger’s ability to find and fix bugs quickly, and its ability to efficiently and effectively handle MPI and parallel code to make development feasible with the budget and resources available to them,” said Chris Gottbrath, product manager at TotalView Technologies. “We listen very carefully to our customers and we’re really pleased that they have told us that we are on the right track.” For additional information about how Applied Research Associates is using TotalView, see the case study on the TotalView Technologies Web site.
