Computer Security Engineer

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is a world leader in science and engineering research, with 11 Nobel Prize recipients over the past 75 years, and 59 present members of the National Academy of Sciences. LBNL conducts unclassified research across a wide range of scientific disciplines and hosts four national user facilities. The person holding this position will be a member of the LBNL Computer Protection Program (CPP) which provides security services and support to LBNL, an unclassified, university-like computing environment. Responsibilities: As part of the Computer Protection Program the individual will take part in incident response, evaluation of new security technologies, identification and management of computer security related projects, deployment of computer security tools, monitoring of policy compliance, and development of cyber security strategy. Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent experience and a minimum of eight years of experience in a similar field, with a minimum of three years of experience in cybersecurity
  • Broad knowledge of computer and network systems (configuration, management, and programming), with an emphasis on and at least five years experience in computer security
  • Ability to operate in a highly heterogeneous network environment
  • Ability to initiate and complete site-wide projects that require both technical and administrative skills
  • Ability to interact and negotiate with a number of different autonomous organizations
  • Ability to recognize security enhancements that will maximize the security profile of LBNL while being sensitive to the mission of its research environment
  • Ability to solve complex problems of diverse scope under the direction of a technical supervisor
  • Ability to stay current with new technologies
  • Solid understanding of UNIX. Experience with maintaining and configuring hardware and/or extensive programming
  • Ability to program with various languages, such as C, C++, shell, awk, Perl
  • Strong understanding and extensive experience of complex TCP/IP networks, system, security vulnerabilities, and security tools
  • Self-motivated, requiring little supervision
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks and respond to rapidly changing priorities
  • Deep experience in one or more of the following areas is a plus: application security, identity management, intrusion detection, forensics, web security, database knowledge (security, configuration, and programming), and information security
  • Experience with Windows, MacOS, and other operating systems is preferable
  • Strong understanding of Windows Active Directory and experience with authentication technologies is desirable

In addition to the qualifications for the Computer Security Engineer III, the Computer Security Engineer IV will have a minimum of 12 years experience, including a minimum of five years experience in cybersecurity and a broad knowledge of computer and network systems (configuration, management, programming). Deep experience in one or more of the following areas a plus: application security, identity management, intrusion detection, forensics, web security, database knowledge (security, configuration, and programming), and information security. Ability to solve complex problems of diverse scope independently.
