Sun Solution Enables Company To Run Solaris, Linux and Windows On Unified Platform: Sun Microsystems - the creator of Solaris Operating Systems (OS), has announced that Computer Sciences Corporation, a leading global information technology (IT) services company, has selected Sun servers to support the next generation global service desk application that will serve a number of CSC's major outsourcing clients. Sun's solution is a 'unit' consisting of Sun Fire X4100 and X4200 servers running the Windows OS and Sun StorageTek 6140 arrays. The successful deployment of Sun's solution is another proof-point that Sun's x64 (x86, 64-bit) servers can run virtually any operating system, including Solaris OS, Linux, VMware and Windows. "We have been pleased with Sun's track record on its servers and support for CSC," said Bill Buskirk, vice president of Global Service Management Solutions, CSC. "Sun has worked hand-in-hand with us to develop integrated solutions that address our specific needs, and, with this particular implementation, saved us time and cost by providing fully configured and tested infrastructures." Choosing Sun's infrastructure solution for its next-generation service model - which supports one client now and will support many outsourcing clients in the future - has resulted in significant benefits for CSC. In addition to helping the existing client achieve ITIL compliance, Sun's solution will reduce the cost of labor and support by accommodating additional users per unit, and the Sun Fire servers' low power and cooling requirements will result in additional operational cost savings. As a global outsourcer of large, multinational clients, CSC needs the ability to run multiple operating environments, but at the same time, looks to standardize on as few components as possible to reduce cost and complexity.
