EMCORE Supplies SmartLink InfiniBand Modules to SC|05
EMCORE Corporation, a leading provider of compound semiconductor-based components and subsystems for the broadband, fiber optic, satellite, and wireless communications markets announces that its SmartLink InfiniBand fiber attached modules will be used by server, switch, computer and storage vendors to provide InfiniBand connections to the SCInet and StorCloud networks at the upcoming SC05 supercomputing trade show. The SC05 show is to be held in Seattle, WA at the Washington State Convention Center on November 12-18, 2005. Charles Wang, Director of Module Development for EMCORE's Fiber Optics Division, stated, "In large computing environments such high-performance computing (HPC) installations, clustered enterprise servers, and even the SC05 trade show, the distributed placement of equipment necessitates the use of SmartLink modules to extend the reach of these critical interfaces. The distance constraints are common in a range of high end datacenter environments, providing a robust market for EMCORE's innovative SmartLink modules." Mellanox Technologies, a leading supplier of InfiniBand switch silicon and HCAs, who announced in April 2005 that they had shipped over 500,000 ports to switch, storage and HCA vendors throughout the industry, supports the SmartLink's inclusion in SC05 demonstrations. "EMCORE's SmartLink module optically extends 10Gb/s connections up to 300 meters providing a significant benefit to the deployment of high node count InfiniBand compute and storage clusters based on Mellanox adapters and switch silicon," said Ted Rado, Vice President of Marketing for Mellanox Technologies. "This capability will be demonstrated live at the Supercomputing 2005 tradeshow where exhibitors will connect to a unified InfiniBand fabric via SmartLink fiber connections on the show floor. Enabled by EMCORE's fiber module solution, this cluster will highlight the broad-based market acceptance and vendor interoperability of InfiniBand fabrics for performance computing and data center applications." EMCORE's pluggable optical InfiniBand interconnects are supported by the inclusion of fiber attached optical interfaces in the InfiniBand Architecture Specification 1.2 released in October 2004. Since release of the SmartLink, EMCORE has seen substantial market interest and increasing shipments. The decision to use the SmartLink module in the SC05 industry-wide SCInet and StorCloud demonstrations further supports the SmartLink's broad acceptance among customers and partners. The EMCORE SmartLink enables conversion of electrical system ports running at 10 Gb/s to optical with a reach up to 300m over ribbonized multi-mode fiber. As double data rate InfiniBand applications start to appear in early 2006, with port speeds of 20Gb/s, EMCORE anticipates release of next generation devices which will continue to support our market position. Over the past year EMCORE has also seen a steady increase in SmartLink interest from other segments, such as 10Gigabit Ethernet, PCI-Express and ASI Switching. The SmartLink module accommodates these communications standards and enables varied systems to be optimized for electrical interfaces, yet have the option of converting the port output to optical for extended reach requirements. EMCORE's diverse family of digital fiber optic products support a full range of Data Center, Clustered Server, HPC, Workgroup, Enterprise, Campus and Metropolitan Area Network applications, providing link distances from 1m to 40km. Each of EMCORE's pluggable modules enables a "Pay-as-You-Populate" cost structure during system installation.
