SunAmerica Aligns with EMC AutoIS Software Strategy
HOPKINTON, MA -- EMC Corporation announced today that SunAmerica Inc., a financial services company providing nearly three million Americans with retirement-savings products and services, is among a growing number of companies deploying software under EMC's advanced Automated Information Storage (AutoIS) strategy. SunAmerica, a member of American International Group, Inc. (AIG), will utilize EMC networked storage systems and software to achieve unprecedented levels of openness and control of information across heterogeneous storage, server and network environments. "EMC's software in support of its AutoIS vision will allow us to move to the next level of Open Storage Management," said David Ballard, SunAmerica's Vice President of Operations and network services. "AutoIS provides us with the tools to measure how efficiently our applications are utilizing storage and the ability to fluidly and rapidly move our storage assets around regardless of storage system, server or systems management platforms. Our business is characterized by constant change and growth—we're always adding new server platforms, consolidating applications and migrating data between our mainframe and open systems. We expect ECC/Open Edition and StorageScope software will significantly reduce the percentage of unused storage assets in our environment." "We have evaluated the other major vendors, but EMC remains the only one to develop a full suite of products that can manage information across multiple storage platforms in a mirrored environment. Other products we looked at lacked maturity, while EMC is delivering market-tested products that will allow us to consolidate and manage our business critical information more efficiently and at a lower cost," said Ballard. EMC Networked Storage EMC Global Services consultants are working closely with Los Angeles-based SunAmerica to consolidate its Sun Solaris Unix, Dell Windows NT and Compaq Windows NT storage onto EMC networked storage. The EMC environment is composed of EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems, EMC Celerra network attached storage (NAS) file servers and EMC Connectrix Fibre Channel director and switches. The EMC storage network will support Microsoft Exchange, data warehousing, SAP, e-business, mainframe and other core business applications on a consolidated information storage infrastructure. SunAmerica is implementing EMC ControlCenter/Open Edition (ECC/Open Edition) and EMC Enterprise ControlCenter StorageScope (EMC StorageScope) to simplify management and provide more detailed intelligence about its EMC infrastructure, as well as Compaq-based Windows NT storage supporting other critical applications. To fine-tune its information management capabilities even further, SunAmerica also is implementing other EMC software such as ESN Manager, EMC InfoMover and EMC Symmetrix Optimizer. Moving toward 7x24 Operations with EMC Business Continuity SunAmerica is deploying EMC Data Manager (EDM) to provide high-performance backup and restoration of its Unix and Windows NT databases. EDM will be integrated with EMC TimeFinder software to provide online, just-in-time copies of SunAmerica's production environments. "When we first moved to EMC Symmetrix, disk stability and outages became a non-issue, and information availability increased dramatically," noted Ballard. "We're now implementing EMC's EDM/TimeFinder solution to further reduce our backup times. This is a significant component of our 7x24 operations." Frank Hauck, EMC's Executive Vice President of Customer Operations, said, "SunAmerica's sophisticated strategy for intelligent data management will lead to significant improvements in cost efficiencies and customer satisfaction. With EMC AutoIS, businesses will have access to tools to make storage management automated, simple and open." For more information visit www.emc.com
