SGI Introduces Faster Microprocessor Across Product Lines

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA -- SGI (NYSE: SGI) today announced the availability of faster MIPS® R14000A(TM) microprocessors for its high-end servers, workstations, and advanced graphics supercomputers. The new 600 MHz processor boosts performance of SGI® products by up to 37% on many technical and creative applications used by professionals in media, government and defense, science and manufacturing markets. Like its predecessors, the MIPS R14000A processor focuses on generating maximum application performance at low cost. SGI systems are optimized to take advantage of the processor's highly efficient design, which draws only 15 watts of power, compared with more than 100 watts for most other 64-bit processors. ``The new, faster R14000A demonstrates our long-term commitment to our MIPS technology-based product lines,'' said Susan Tellep, director of product marketing for SGI. ``SGI is continuing to lead the way in offering the best application performance for any budget, with a consistent product roadmap and development environment that our customers can rely on.'' Visual Workstations Recognized as the most advanced visualization desktop systems, the Silicon Graphics® Octane2(TM) visual workstations with SGI® VPro(TM) V12 and V10 graphics and new MIPS R14000A processors running at 550 MHz and 600 MHz are available for immediate purchase. SGI offers the Octane2 configurations with the new processors at no increase in price from previous configurations using 400 MHz or 360 MHz, yielding as much as 37% improvement in application performance. SGI is also announcing a 13% lower list price on 400 MHz Octane2 configurations with VPro V6 graphics. The new R14000A processors are also offered in the new Silicon Graphics Fuel(TM) visual workstation, which is designed to maximize the performance of desktop applications while delivering unprecedented price/performance value. Leveraging the high-bandwidth system design of the SGI® 3000 series systems and offered with either a single 500 MHz processor with 2MB L2 cache or a 600 MHz processor with 4MB L2 cache, Silicon Graphics Fuel delivers significantly higher processing and application performance for similarly configured systems at three times the overall price/performance value. SGI 3000 Series Systems The MIPS R14000A processor is also available immediately in SGI® Origin® 3000 server series and SGI® Onyx® 3000 series advanced graphics systems, increasing computational performance by up to 20%, based on SGI testing. The SGI Origin family of servers and supercomputers provides the most performance in the industry at any price point, as measured by multi-processor benchmark results published by the Standard Performance Evaluation Committee.
