MSC.Software Purchases SGI VirtualInsight Business

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA -- MSC.Software (NYSE: MNS - news), a leading global provider of simulation software, services and systems, and SGI (NYSE: SGI - news), a global leader in high-performance computing, visualization and complex data management, today announced that MSC.Software has purchased the SGI VirtualInsight(TM) line of business. The VirtualInsight software suite is a data management system that allows manufacturing companies to drive down the cost of design and testing while improving time to market for new products. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. ``VirtualInsight adds a new dimension to our established simulation data management software and services capabilities,'' said Frank Perna, chairman and chief executive officer of MSC.Software. ``Many companies have recognized the value that they gain from having critical data accessible to anyone in the enterprise that needs it. Extending existing PDM and ERP capabilities to encompass product performance presents significant technical challenges. MSC.Software's successful simulation data management initiatives and long history in the product development market puts us in a unique position to be able to help our current and future customers leverage their simulation data and save even more time and money while designing and manufacturing products.'' ``This transaction builds upon the strong relationship between SGI and MSC.Software and on our history of joint customer successes,'' said SGI Vice President of Industry and Solutions Marketing Knut Korsell. ``As the leading platform supplier for automotive design and simulation, SGI developed the initial version of VirtualInsight utilizing our expertise in providing advanced IT solutions addressing manufacturing design issues. It's a testimonial to its effectiveness that it is now in full production by a major automobile manufacturer. MSC.Software is uniquely poised to realize VirtualInsight's potential for further applications in sectors such as aerospace, automotive and electronic products.'' The Web-based VirtualInsight system manages all of the data created during the R&D and production processes, helping companies efficiently and effectively manage and utilize the data for current and future product development uses. VirtualInsight includes data management software customized for specific applications (such as automotive crash simulations) and integrated with each customer's existing processes and legacy systems. The system manages all of the data created during these processes, automatically tracking data dependencies and structuring the data for efficient use. VirtualInsight was developed by SGI in conjunction with a leading automobile manufacturer. According to consulting and research firm CIMdata, the market for product development management software and services like VirtualInsight is expected to exceed $13 billion by 2005.
