Acceleware Unveils Support for NVidia's Fermi Architecture

Acceleware has announced support for NVidia's next generation Fermi architecture of Tesla GPUs to power the company's line of Oil & Gas and Electromagnetic software acceleration products.

According to a release, Acceleware customers continually push the computing boundaries by running more complex simulations or processing multi-dimensional seismic images and therefore have a constant appetite for more computing power. The new Tesla 20-series Fermi GPUs combined with Acceleware software libraries deliver a significant performance boost for customer's computing tasks while maintaining the GPU advantages for High Performance Computing (HPC) including low cost, lower energy requirements and a compact footprint.

"For over six years Acceleware has leveraged its extensive experience in utilizing GPUs for HPC to solve their customers' computational challenges," said Andy Keane, general manager, Tesla business unit. "With support for our latest generation GPU architecture, they can now leverage new features such as ECC and increased double precision performance to deliver substantial improvements to their customers' codes and applications."

One of the key new capabilities in the Tesla-20-series architecture is an upgrade in double precision calculation performance. This opens the door for more customers using linear algebra solvers to adopt GPUs in areas such as oil & gas reservoir simulations, mechanical solvers and other engineering related tasks. More memory on-board the C2070 series of Tesla GPUs also provides better performance for customers running complex simulations or big seismic migration volumes. The ECC Support in the Tesla 20-series is a top feature for HPC customers requiring enhanced reliability.

"NVIDIA's Fermi architecture is important for GPU computing to maintain the price/ performance gap relative to CPUs", said Robert Miller, Vice-President of Marketing and Product Management of Acceleware. "Customers have been eagerly anticipating the double precision capabilities of Fermi and we believe this release opens up exciting new opportunities for Acceleware in markets such as reservoir simulation and mechanical engineering."

Acceleware customers currently under maintenance will automatically receive software upgrades that allow them to take advantage of Fermi support. Acceleware software is supported on the new Tesla C2050, C2070, M2050, and S2050/70 platforms as well as legacy hardware.
