Dutch research gets new national supercomputing center
SURFsara and TelecityGroup to build powerful supercomputing center at Amsterdam Science Park
SURFsara, the principal provider of large-scale computing power, cloud services and data storage to the Dutch academic community, has selected TelecityGroup, the leading European supplier of carrier-neutral data centres, to supply data centre services at Amsterdam Science Park, that will enable the advanced, high-performance computing that is required for the advancement of scientific research in the Netherlands. TelecityGroup will build an entirely new, extremely efficient premium data centre at its existing AMS01 data centre location at Amsterdam Science Park. This data centre will guarantee scalable computing power for the Dutch scientific community for decades to come.
Computing power for science
SURFsara already manages a number of advanced computing and storage systems including Cartesius, the new Dutch national supercomputer, a high performance cloud computing infrastructure for research purposes, and the Dutch national archive for large-scale data archiving. As such, SURFsara is an essential partner for scientific research, supporting national and international universities, institutes, and companies. SURFsara and its partners are investing in this expansion with TelecityGroup due to their requirements for a high-density computing environment which offers flexible and efficient data centre solutionsto meet on demand increasing needs for computing and storage capacity.
New data centre
The new AMS01 data centre in Amsterdam Science Park will be opened in 2016. From opening, the new facility will benefit from the significant connectivity options available and provide an ideal location for SURFsara’s infrastructure, as fast connections and the lowest possible latencies are crucial for IT systems-based algorithmic research to be conducted effectively and efficiently.
“Advanced high performance computing systems and sustainable IT infrastructure are essential for top level research,” said Anwar Osseyran, Managing Director at SURFsara. “We have chosen to develop a flexible datacentre so that we will be able to expand capacity ‘on demand’. This will enable us to implement new ICT solutions quickly and efficiently."
Alexandra Schless, Vice President Western Europe, TelecityGroup, comments: “We are particularly proud that the TelecityGroup team has been entrusted with making this substantial contribution to the progress of science in the Netherlands by hosting SURFsara’s high quality, integrated ICT infrastructure. We look forward to working together, and we are delighted that such a distinguished and important project will be the first to go live in the new data centre at Amsterdam Science Park in 2016.”
