Vertica today announced a strategic partnership with Cloudera, the commercial Hadoop company, and increased support for MapReduce at the Hadoop World Conference 2009 - the premiere conference supporting enterprise users of the open source Apache Hadoop product.

The Cloudera partnership enables Vertica to offer native support for MapReduce via connectivity to the standard Hadoop framework. The benefits of integrating with Hadoop are numerous. Hadoop affords customers significant flexibility in deploying batch processing next to their analytic database. For example, Hadoop has become a powerful tool for financial data algorithm development. Combined with large tick stores, Hadoop enables fast, large scale iterative development of these algorithms. This scale of analysis increases possibilities for simulation based validation. By combining Hadoop with a scalable analytic database, like Vertica, users can re-create stable simulations and store large reusable results for further analysis.

The Vertica interface to Hadoop gives MapReduce developers the ability to perform highly scalable in-database analytics by making it easy to store and retrieve data from the equally scalable Vertica Analytic Database. This unique combination of a massively parallel processing (MPP) analytic database and MPP compute framework gives enterprises the flexibility to process large sets of structured and unstructured data and make them available to business users at Web speeds.

Philip Howard of Bloor Research recently commented that Vertica's introduction of support for MapReduce differs from the approach of other vendors in that it supports it as a parallel capability rather than as something only accessible through SQL.

The Vertica Analytic Database has a unique columnar, MPP architecture and pioneering data compression to reduce storage requirements by as much as 90 percent, dramatically cutting hardware overhead and energy consumption so companies can analyze larger amounts of data at a fraction of the cost. It can operate directly on that compressed data, delivering query results 50 to 200 times faster than other databases.
