Univa UD Selected As Presenter at Cloud Slam ‘09

Company to Present Customer Case Study Using Cloud Technology for Scientific Research

Univa UD announced today that they have been chosen to present at Cloud Slam ‘09, the world’s largest virtual cloud computing conference.

Held April 20-24, Cloud Slam '09 will explore technology, business models, industry experiences, legal aspects, research, development and innovations in cloud computing. The virtual conference will bring together leading scientists, economists, legislators and policy analysts from around the world to address the shape and future of cloud computing.

Univa UD will present with their customer Pathwork Diagnostics, Inc., a leading molecular diagnostics company focused on oncology. Pathwork has chosen Univa UD’s UniCloud and the Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud service (Amazon EC2) to provide cloud computing for peak research needs.

The presentation, which will take place April 20, 3pm, EST, will give an end-user perspective of how adopting cloud technology has aided the company with their research that requires massive amounts of computational power at certain peak times. Pathwork Diagnostics, looking to avoid a large hardware investment, decided to implement a cloud computing solution choosing Amazon EC2 for pay-per-use computing.  To build their HPC cloud clusters in EC2, Pathwork selected UniCloud which extends their UniCluster cluster management product into public cloud services.

“We are excited to have customers using cloud technology today, and reaping the rewards of lower costs and unlimited capacity,” states Gary Tyreman, vice president and general manager, HPC division at Univa UD. “Those who attend our session will learn how one of our customers was able to easily implement UniCloud to further their innovation, which will allow them to save nearly one million dollars over the next five years.”

“Our challenge was a perfect fit for cloud computing, because we needed access to more computing capacity than we could possibly maintain internally – but only at certain peak times,” explains Ljubomir Buturovic, Chief Scientist at Pathwork Diagnostics.  “We found EC2 to be the most convenient cloud solution and UniCloud to be the best software infrastructure tool to use.”

“The decision to use UniCloud was basically a no-brainer,” Buturovic adds.

Igor Edelmann, Vice Chairman Cloud Slam ’09, commented, “We are thrilled to have Univa UD and Pathwork Diagnostics, Inc. participate in this event. Their expertise and unique client case study will provide new insight and market intelligence for all attendees.”
