TOP500 Supercomputing Site Ranks SGI in Top Three
SGI (NYSE: SGI), a provider of high-performance computing and visualization solutions for technical and creative users, today announced that the company maintains its leadership position among leading suppliers of the world's top 500 most powerful supercomputers. SGI(TM) exceeded a number of its competitors by delivering more processing power and number of systems used. Ranked third, SGI upholds its dominance in the supercomputing industry for superior performance and installed base for the 17th consecutive TOP500 Supercomputing list. Released separately today at the International Supercomputer Conference '01 in Heidelberg, Germany, the TOP500 Supercomputing Sites list reported that the U.S. continues to lead the world in supercomputing power and use; with academic and research agencies also increasing their use of these supercomputing systems. Many top research and academic organizations continue to favor SGI systems, utilizing NUMAflex(TM) architecture, allowing the computer's resources to work simultaneously on certain problems. Hence, SGI remains one of the top providers for these agencies and upholds its top rank as a dominant vendor on the semi-annual list. “For over eight years, SGI has continued to lead in the Top 500 list commanding an eminent force in the high-performance computing community,” said Jan Silverman, senior vice president of marketing. "This report reaffirms our leadership and commitment in providing our customers the best performance to conquer their toughest computing problems." The TOP500 Supercomputing Sites list is compiled and published by Jack Dongarra, Hans Meuer and Erich Strohmaier from the University of Tennessee and University of Mannheim (Germany).
