Dataquest Names EMC #1 in Network Attached Storage Revenue

HOPKINTON, MA -- EMC is #1 in Network Attached Storage (NAS) revenue, according to a new report from Gartner Dataquest. The industry's first independent NAS market share research using actual full-year 2001 results revealed total NAS revenue grew 12% in 2001. Highlights from the report, "2001 Network-Attached Storage Market Share," include: NAS Market Leadership EMC led the total NAS market with 48.6% revenue share in 2001, outpacing the previous market leader by nearly 14 percentage points. High End NAS Leadership EMC led the high-end NAS segment in 2001 with 60.4% revenue share, a 12 point gain over the previous year. NAS Gateway Leadership In 2001 EMC captured 89.4% revenue share of the new NAS Gateway segment. A NAS Gateway is an intelligent File Server, such as EMC Celerra, attached to a Storage Area Network (SAN). Dramatic Midrange Growth EMC grew midrange NAS revenues 107% in 2001, doubling revenue share to 15.2%. David Donatelli, EMC Executive Vice President, Storage Platforms Operations said, "In 2001 customers clearly voted their NAS dollars in favor of intelligent, networked storage. These findings underscore the tremendous momentum behind highly functional, software-rich Network Attached Storage platforms that leverage the consolidation and management benefits of Storage Area Network technology." EMC's portfolio of network attached storage systems, software, and services uniquely addresses the mission-criticality of file-based information. The EMC Celerra File Server and EMC CLARiiON IP4700 are the NAS platforms of choice for organizations requiring intelligent, agile storage solutions that blend IP-based file-sharing with EMC's world's leading networked storage platforms and software. Autodesk, based in San Rafael, California, recently invested in multiple EMC Celerra file servers to support Autodesk Buzzsaw, its web-based project collaboration service for the building industry. The world's leading design software and digital content creation company is currently deploying EMC open management and business continuity software to support over 30 terabytes of networked information storage across multiple data centers. Roberto Sigona, Director of Information Technology for building collaboration services said, "Our customers rely on our software and services applications to collaborate and share content-rich digital files. Rapid, reliable information exchange is at the core of our business. EMC's Celerra and software provides us with unmatched availability, performance and information management, allowing us to take our services to a higher level of disaster protection and performance." Earlier this year Gartner Dataquest reported EMC has widened its revenue lead as the world's #1 provider of storage management software. In 2001 EMC led the growing $4.9 billion market with 30.4% revenue share, outpacing the closest vendor by more than 10 percentage points ("EMC Extended Lead in 2001 as #1 Storage Management Software Supplier," April 4, 2002). "Customers around the world need help consolidating massive amounts of information and eliminating the management complexity of networked storage," commented Donatelli. "As these reports indicate, EMC is clearly answering the challenge. By 2005 over two-thirds of the world's information storage will be networked and, considering our market lead today, EMC is uniquely positioned to capitalize on the opportunity of tomorrow."
