UC San Diego and Industry Partners Showcase Engineering Research

Technology-driven corporations will have unparalleled access to faculty and student researchers at the 23rd annual Research Review of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Jacobs School of Engineering. From tissue engineering and computer vision to a new system for tracking global Internet attacks, researchers will present their results, and attendees will tour laboratories, see technology demonstrations, and interact with more than 200 graduate students (and potential employees) during a morning poster session. The Research Review will take place next Friday, February 27, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Price Center on the UCSD campus in La Jolla, California. This year's theme: "Living Labs: Application-Driven Technology Testbeds." Over 20 faculty speakers will describe how new technologies are being integrated and deployed, setting the stage for emerging markets in biotechnology, defense, and information technology. The event is hosted by the Jacobs School's Corporate Affiliates Program (CAP), which cultivates and sustains relationships with industry. "This is a great opportunity for senior technology officers, information officers, technical directors, engineers, and researchers, as well as technical recruiters to visit the campus and plug into the people and cutting-edge projects we have here," said Anne O'Donnell, executive director of the CAP program. "They will be able to talk about possible collaborations with faculty who share their interests, and cultivate talented grad students for employment opportunities. In a matter of hours, they will get a fix on where current research at UCSD is heading -- and how they might be able to benefit from it." Nearly two dozen CAP member companies will also showcase their technologies at the morning Exhibition, including AT&T; BAE SYSTEMS; Callaway Golf; Conexant Systems; Cymer; Delta Design; Fair Isaac; General Atomics; Hewlett-Packard; Hughes Network Systems; Lockheed Martin; ORINCON Corporation; NAVAIR - North Island; NCR Corporation; Northrop Grumman Space Technology Systems; QUALCOMM; Raytheon; Rincon Research; SAIC; Skyworks Solutions; Sun Microsystems; SYS Technologies; Unisys; and ViaSat. The keynote speaker is Joe McCarthy of Intel Research Seattle, who will describe his work on "active environments" that can sense and respond to people and their activities.
